Adam Levine Says: "F--- You VMA's" (BLOG)

While many of the world's biggest pop stars are getting ready to appear at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards tomorrow night (Aug. 28), Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine is flipping the middle finger to the network's long-running ceremony.

"The VMA's. one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music," Levine posted on Twitter Saturday afternoon. "I'm drawing a line in the sand. fuck you VMA's."Levine's anti-VMA rant comes seven years after Maroon 5 was given the Best New Artist trophy for the music video to their hit single "This Love." In 2004, the group trumped artists like Kanye West, Jet and Yellowcardfor the Best New Artist trophy. Maroon 5 has yet to perform at the MTV VMA's, and are not nominated for any awards this year.

"The Voice" judge also echoes a softer plea from Justin Timberlake, who implored MTV to air more music videos while accepting an award at the 2007 MTV VMAs. "Play more damn videos," Timberlake, still fresh off the success of "Futuresex/LoveSounds," said at the time. "We don't want to see the Simpsons on reality television. Play more videos!"

Earlier this month, Levine took a shot at another music-based TV juggernaut -- "American Idol" -- by claiming that the show did not promote openly gay contestants. "C'mon. You can't be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break," Levine told Out Magazine. "Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe later responded to Levine's criticisms by saying, "There's no reason that I would see why anybody that goes on television should start coming out with who they are, what they are, what they're sexuality is, who they're going to vote for or what their religion is."The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will feature performances from Lady Gaga, Chris Brown, Adele, Beyonce and Lil Wayne, among others, from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles tomorrow night.
