What is SEO contest?

An SEO contest is an activity awarding prizes that challenges search engine optimization (SEO) practitioners to rank themselves among the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN using certain keyword(s). This type of contest is controversial because it often leads to massive amounts of link spamming as participants try to boost the rankings of their pages by any means available. The organizing body of an SEO competition may hold the activity without promotion of a product or service in mind; or they may organize a contest in order to market something on the Internet. Participants can showcase their skills and potentially discover and share new techniques for promoting websites. An example of this contest is Hectic Capiznon Bloggers 2009. This is a new Inter-School SEO contest. This Search Engine Optimization (SEO) contest exclusive for students, teachers and graduates of Capiz was launched last January 23, 2009. We should all be proud as Capiznon.

A View from the Corner

Andrzej Gmitruk, trainer of Poland's Tomasz Adamek, is looking forward to Friday's fight against Johnathon Banks in Newark, New Jersey.

He’s not a well-known name in the United States, but Andrzej Gmitruk, trainer of The Ring magazine and IBF Cruiserweight titlist Tomasz Adamek, is a big name in Polish boxing circles.

With the hard training all wrapped up, Gmitruk took a few minutes to tell what he thinks will happen Friday night when Adamek meets the undefeated Johnathon Banks at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Adamek is making the first defense of the 200-pound title that he won from Steve Cunningham in a thrilling fight back in December.

“Banks is a gifted fighter and he has a powerful punch,” says Gmitruk of the Emanuel Steward trained challenger. “From what we’ve studied, we see that he hits hard with both hands. I notice that when he punches his feet are wide apart, so we’re going to have to watch out for that early in the fight.”

With a record of 20-0 (14)KO, Banks is much less experienced than Adamek, who is a former WBC light heavyweight titlist with a record of 36-1 (24)KO. Gmitruk and Adamek are hoping to capitalize on the fact that Banks has been a professional less than five years, has only boxed 71 pro rounds and has never beaten a top-10 ranked contender.

“I don’t think Banks is as good as Steve Cunningham,” said Gmitruk. “Cunningham is a much busier fighter and I think he probably has much better stamina than Banks. But Tomasz and I have studied him quite a bit and together we’ve settled on a plan that will lead to victory. We studied his fight against Vincenzo Rositto and we were able to make a few pretty good observations about him and we see weaknesses in his game.”

Gmitruk and Adamek work the pads in anticipation that they will need to be sharp to turn back the challenge of Johnathon Banks.

As of last Friday, Gmitruk said Adamek weighed 205 pounds and that all aspects of his training and nutrition were closely monitored to bring him down to the 199 pounds he weighed in at on Thursday.

“He’s dynamic and fast and he’s looking very impressive right now. We sparred with three different sparring partners for a total of 10 rounds one day last week. These weren’t the greatest fighters mind you, but Tom was as strong in the ninth and tenth rounds as he was in the first. If Banks is still around on Friday night after ten rounds he won’t be able to keep up with Tom in the last couple of rounds. Right now, Tom is seeing everything. He’s blocking punches, his stamina is there and we’ve been concentrating on making him an even stronger fighter with specific strength exercises.”

Gmitruk claims that just in the couple of months since the thrilling fight against Cunningham that Adamek has improved.

“We only took about two or three weeks off after the fight against Cunningham and that was all we needed to regenerate,” said Gmitruk. “We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for this fight, not as long as we did for Cunningham. But we didn’t need that much time because Tom’s fitness level was already there after all of the training we did for Cunningham. We started out training lightly and then really stepped it up before tapering off this week.”

Gmitruk also talked about the Emanuel Steward factor. The hall of fame trainer is in Banks’ corner and Gmitruk said that Steward can never be underestimated.

Adamek is known for always being in shape and for being able dish out the punishment as well as take it.

“I’ve known Emanuel for many years and I met him a long time ago in Norway. He is a man of the highest character, a great tactician and he’s a huge personality. It’s a big honor for me to go against him with him standing in the other corner. I think when we look over and see Steward in the corner that it will have a psychological effect on both of us. He’s an American boxing legend.”

Gmitruk, however, knows his man is going to win.

“No question about it. We’ve studied the American closely and we can counter everything he does. We’re going to take away his right hand and take away his speed early. We are intelligent and we are ready for whatever he can do.”

The oddsmakers agree with Gmitruk and have installed Adamek as the overwhelming favorite to retain his title, likely by stoppage.

A “Complicated” and “Violent” Fight

One of the top fighters in the world, Juan Manuel Marquez says that Saturday's fight against Juan Diaz is must see TV.

Juan Manuel Marquez, the #2 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, said on Tuesday afternoon that this weekend’s fight against Juan Diaz, “Is going to be a complicated fight and it’s going to be a violent fight.”

Marquez and Diaz will clash Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Diaz’ hometown of Houston, Texas. Up for grabs is The Ring magazine 135-pound championship as well as the vacant lightweight belts from the WBA and WBO.

It is a much anticipated fight and the winner will have almost unlimited opportunities.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told a group of reporters, also on Tuesday afternoon, "That this is the biggest gate - dollar wise - in Texas history. 15,000 people and it is a sell-out. It will be an amazing, amazing night.”

Although he is traveling to Juan Diaz’ backyard for the fight, the fearless Marquez claims that is of no consequence to him.

“I feel calm and I have no worries about fighting in Texas,” said the 35 year old, 54 fight veteran who will be facing a fighter 10 years younger. Marquez, who lost his first pro fight way back in 1993, claims that his “clean living” and the fact that he trains “very, very hard” and that “I’m young at heart” will all help him to overcome the challenge of Diaz.

Marquez, who goes by the nickname 'Dinamita' said that Diaz, “Is a smart fighter and a strong volume puncher. However, I believe that we have the strategy to beat him.” When asked to explain exactly what the game plan that he and Nacho Beristain have developed to beat Diaz, he declined to elaborate.

“You’ll have to wait until Saturday night to see,” he coyly said.

Promoter Richard Schaefer (center) pictured with Ricky Hatton and Paulie Malignaggi.

In terms of the future for either Marquez or Diaz, whom are both promoted by Golden Boy, Richard Schaefer said that both could be a future opponent for the winner of Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton.

“Absolutely,” exclaimed Schaefer. “The winner of this fight could move up. But at lightweight there is a lot of opportunities there, too.”

For his part, Marquez is still craving a third fight against Pacquiao.

“Hopefully, there is a third fight between us,” he said.

The clash would be a natural should Marquez get by Diaz and should Pacquiao prove victorious over Hatton in May. When Marquez was asked if anything surprised him about Pacquiao’s recent fight against Oscar De La Hoya he was very candid with his answer.

“The fact that he won was very, very surprising,” chuckled Marquez. “We all expected Oscar to win.”

Despite the horrendous world economy there is some encouraging news for boxing fans. Richard Schaefer seems quite excited with the recent box office performance of fights that have taken place away from Las Vegas. Saturday night’s sell-out in Texas seems to have convinced him (along with Bob Arum) that boxing needs to go back to the people - so to speak.

“There’s probably been too many fights in Las Vegas,” admitted Schaefer. “We need to develop fighters as a local attraction and then take them to Vegas. This is great news for the fight fans. It will help to build fighters in their hometown and also develop them into big stars.”

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

The amiable Juan Diaz and HBO's Larry Merchant share a laugh and a smile after one of Diaz' recent wins.

If you're old enough to have grown up watching 'Sesame Street' you can probably remember the fun little song called, 'One of These Things is Not Like the Others' sung by Bob and Susan.

The chorus was 'One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong, Can you tell which thing is not like the others, By the time I finish my song?'

Well, if you're a boxing fan, the one fighter that is not like the others is Juan 'The Baby Bull' Diaz.

He's preparing right now to face one of the best fighters in the world in Juan Manuel Marquez. The two will square off Saturday night in Diaz' hometown of Houston, Texas for The Ring magazine, WBA and WBO lightweight titles.

It's a highly anticipated bout that will be televised by HBO to what will likely be a raucous, full house at the Toyota Center in Houston. The winner will be recognized as the best 135-pound fighter in a lightweight division that is jam packed with top tier talent. The opportunities for the victor will be limitless.

While nothing about any of this fight is that much different from what happens in the sport of boxing on a fairly regular basis, what is different, very different, is Juan Diaz.

At only 25 years old, Diaz has already been a professional fighter for nine years. He is a former IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight champion who successfully defended parts of those titles seven times over three and a half years. He possesses an overall career record of 34-1 (17)KO. His only loss was last year and it was a costly one to Nate Campbell in which he lost all of his titles and his undefeated record.

In an upset loss, Diaz took his lumps against a resurgent Nate Campbell who proved to be the only one of Diaz' professional opponents that could hang with him.

But while he was busy accomplishing all that and cracking other prizefighters upside the head, Juan Diaz has also been cracking the books. In May he will graduate from the University of Houston with a degree in Political Science and he hopes one day to become an attorney.

"I want to do all my future fighting in a courtroom and not in a boxing ring," he proudly says.

Diaz has made the sacrifice over the past several years to fit the studies into his busy schedule as a full-time world champion. While many boxers struggle to maintain the focus to train and fight a few times a year, Juan Diaz successfully did that while rarely missing a day of school. If he fought against some of the best boxers in the world in Connecticut or Mexico or Las Vegas on a Saturday night - he could be counted on to be in attendance for class in Texas first thing Monday morning.

He has become a millionaire from boxing and he doesn't spend his money recklessly. Up until a few years ago he still resided with parents and younger brother in a humble home without all of the trappings of fame and fortune. But Juan Diaz studies as hard in the classroom as he does in the gym and he has a burning desire to lend a hand to the less fortunate, particularly the Mexican immigrants that form the basis of his heritage.

"I thought about not going to school this semester because of the big fight coming up against Marquez," explained the soft-spoken and very polite Diaz. "But you know, I decided that in a lot of ways this is just like my other fights and in some respects Marquez is just another guy. I didn't want to hold back graduating and so I decided to put the work in and do it."

Diaz attacked Acelino Freitas round after round with such reckless abandon that he finally forced the Brazilian to quit.

Diaz is a stocky fighter with a thick waist who drives forward while relentlessly throwing punches. His swarming, pressure style typically grinds his opposition down to the point where they are exhausted with having to fend off the perpetual motion assault that is constantly coming at them. He doesn't have the one-punch power that can take out a top guy with one shot, but he focuses on the lost art of body punching and when he goes downstairs the opposition feels it. The punches land with a thud and they sound like one of those big heavy car doors from the 1970s being slammed shut.

Diaz claims his plan to deal with Marquez on Saturday night is not going to deviate from the norm. Although Marquez, ten years older than Diaz, is generally ranked as the #2 fighter in the world in the pound-for-pound ratings, that doesn't worry him.

"My game plan is to tire those old legs of his out," says Diaz who claims his weight is now down to 137 or 138 pounds after eight weeks spent training. "What I'm going to do is make him work and I'm going to make him earn his paycheck. The plan for us is to make him have to really work. We want to make him work every second and every minute of every round that he is in there in the ring with us."

Diaz is managed by Willie Savannah, who has been with him since he first laced up a pair of boxing gloves and who he still sometimes respectfully refers to as "Mr. Savannah." He is trained by veteran trainer Ronnie Shields. It's this this solid support base that has helped to keep him centered over the years. Now promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions after a tumultuous few years with Don King, Diaz feels as though he is in a great position to take on Marquez who he calls, "probably the biggest name opponent I've ever faced."

Juan Manuel Marquez (left) and Diaz met up at the press conference to announce their fight that will take place in Houston, Texas.

Diaz knows that Marquez is an exceptional pugilist and he seems well-versed in the weapons that he will bring to the ring.

"What makes Marquez so dangerous is that he's a smart fighter," explains Diaz. "He doesn't get hit with a lot of good, clean punches and every time he goes in there he can do it all. He can counterpunch you, he can fight you, he can box you. The thing about him is that he can do a lot of things that a lot of other boxers can't do. He has been in so many epic fights and people talk about him being 35 years old, but him being 10 years older than me means he has that much more experience in the ring than I do. But then again that's 10 more years of wear and tear on his body."

While Diaz has spent many hours studying Marquez, he has also spent some time studying things such as statistics, politics and economics. His studies have also talked about the financial crisis that has enveloped the world. He knows that the people who will show up on Saturday night to see him are parting with money for tickets that has not come easily to them. Diaz respects that and he has a message for his fans. It's a message from a different type of prizefighter - a self-effacing, seemingly selfless athlete - which is a rare find in this day and age.

"I appreciate the fact that people are willing to spend the few extra dollars that they have to come and see me fight and enjoy a great night of boxing," he says. "I feel that it's my responsibility to train hard and give those people their money's worth."

It's a message that tells you Juan Diaz is definitely not like the others.

The World According to Wright

After an almost two year hiatus, Winky Wright finally returns to the ring in April when he will face Paul Williams at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Ronald 'Winky' Wright just turned 37 years old, hasn't won a fight in over two years, is returning from a sound thrashing at the hands of Bernard Hopkins and is now sporting braces on his teeth.

While a lot has changed with Wright there is still one thing that hasn't - he's still singing the same old song about being the most avoided man in the sport of boxing.

Wright is preparing to face Paul Williams on April 11th in Las Vegas in a fight being televised by HBO and he is eager to get back in the mix at 160 pounds. Looking very fit and very trim the slimmed down Wright, who has an affinity for Krispy Kreme donuts, says April 11th can't come soon enough.

"I've been training and I'm hungry to get back in the ring," says Wright. "I've been away too long and it's time to come back so the fans can see why I think I'm the best fighter there is. Even though I've been away for almost two years I just want to get back and get one of these guys and destroy them."

Wright says he's been using the last few months wisely and when his Dec. 4th fight against Michi Munoz fell through because of an injury to his left hand, Wright said he didn't stray too far away from the gym. And it's a good thing because he's facing a difficult opponent in long, tall southpaw Paul Williams who is ranked by some as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

"I've been training seriously, and I have to, because Paul Williams is young and tall and awkward," explains Wright. "I have to make sure I'm prepared for him and I will be prepared for him so I can go out there and do what I gotta' do."

Wright has been a prizefighter for nearly two decades and has fought all over the world. In all that time, only Bernard Hopkins has beaten him decisively.

To hear Wright tell it, he says a large part of why he has been out of the ring for the past couple of years is because he is still being avoided by the top fighters. Many criticize Wright for pricing himself out of fights - but he says that's not the case at all.

"Look man, it's not me," he says. "They all keep avoiding me! The other fighters are scared to fight! Seriously! I've been trying to fight all the best fighters for so long. There's a half a dozen top guys out there that we approached to fight and we were going to pay them good money to fight me - but they wouldn't take the fight. None of these fighters want to fight me. I'm telling you man, it ain't my fault - it's their fault."

According to Wright - the boxing world is all wrong. And in his view, he believes that once he beats Paul Williams that it will only get worse for him from an opponent standpoint.

"Man, once I beat Williams, there definitely ain't none of them that will want to fight me."

Jennings is Going to Give it His Best Shot

To say that Michael Jennings is a massive underdog in his WBO welterweight title fight against Miguel Cotto on Saturday night would be an understatement. A quick survey of boxing fans and boxing writers will tell you that not a one of them gives the unknown Jennings any chance at all.

But for those willing to take a monetary plunge and bet a few dollars on the fight, Jennings is somewhat of an enticing underdog as a $100 bet on him to win would gain you $1300.

An unknown 31 year-old welterweight from Preston, England with a record of 34-1(16)KO, Jennings is the longest of longshots. But he says for obvious reasons he doesn’t listen to the fans and the writers who say that he is a sacrificial lamb that will be bludgeoned by the Puerto Rican destroyer.

“In my own mind I have to think positively that I’ll beat him,” said Jennings on Tuesday afternoon. “I’m a mentally strong person and every fighter that I watch, I think, yes, I could beat him no matter who it is.”

For Jennings this is his first world title fight, his first fight outside of the United Kingdom and his first time on the world boxing stage. However, he claims he is not letting any of that get to him.

“I don’t pay any attention to the whole scene,” he says. “I don’t have any pressure on me at all because the American public doesn’t know me and they haven’t seen me fight. Most of you guys are probably just expecting me to get blasted out of the ring. But I’m coming to put on a good show and I’m coming to win.”

While Jennings is meeting a Miguel Cotto who is returning from his first loss, he is also meeting a fighter that is ranked as one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world who has 26 knockouts in 32 career wins. Jennings knows the task in front of him is an enormous one.

Jennings is hoping he'll be doing this same pose on Saturday night after the fight against Cotto is over.

“Obviously I’ve got to do everything right and I’ve got to do everything I’m good at,” he says. “I don’t want to go into too much detail with you, because it could all change. You have plans in your mind about what you’re going to do in the ring - you have to have plan A, B, C, D, E. You’ve just got to keep changing, in that sense, however the fight is taking place. But obviously I’m just going to do whatever I’m good at.”

What those who have seen Jennings say that he is good at is throwing a straight left jab, coming forward while actively throwing punches and being up on his toes. Jennings is a busy fighter that likes to throw punches and likes to make the fight and he has a height and reach advantage over Cotto. Jennings knows this is his ‘Rocky Balboa-like’ shot of a lifetime and he’s looking to make the most of it.

“Cotto is a brilliant boxer and I know that,” he says. “But he’s not the biggest welterweight in the world either,” rationalizes Jennings who has fought his entire career as a welterweight. “This is the pinnacle of my career, without a doubt. It’s the best moment in my career as a boxer. When I was an amateur, to think that I was going to end up fighting here in New York at Madison Square Garden? Unbelievable. This is the Mecca of boxing.”

One thing is for sure, is that if Jennings does manage to do the impossible and upset Cotto on Saturday night he would return home to England a hero akin to Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton.

“If I win this fight it would be absolutely brilliant,” he says. “This is the pinnacle of my career. To come over here and win this fight and take the belt home with me would be absolutely brilliant.”

John Duddy is One of the Good Guys

John Duddy has a legion of fans that always show their support and the young Irishman is always happy to see them.

The general feeling is that boxers are the most accessible and down to earth athletes there are. Most of them are quick with a smile, happy to sign an autograph and are easygoing when a fan asks for a moment of their time.

And I would say, aside from a few exceptions, that I would agree with that overall characterization of prizefighters.

But some of the guys can be difficult.

There was the windy April night in Denver, Colorado back in 1997 that I sat with a bloated, 260-pound Michael Dokes in his dressing room at the decrepit Aztlan Theater in Denver, Colorado.

The 38 year-old Dokes, a former WBA heavyweight titlist, was pretty much at the end of the line as a prizefighter and he was in no mood to relive old times as he had his hands wrapped for a fight against club fighter Louis Monaco.

Dokes’ voice barely rose above a raspy whisper, he never removed his sunglasses and he wouldn’t allow any pictures to be taken. He did say that he was doing well financially and that he owned homes in Miami and Las Vegas.

But Dokes’ purse on that night was $2,500 and the ramshackle ring had real rope for ropes (like you’d see in a rodeo) and only one big spotlight illuminated what, for Dokes, was otherwise a very dark night.

Michael 'Dynamite' Dokes in one of his final fights. Dokes was not always happy to have his picture taken or be the center of attention.

He was dropped in the second round, had his nose broken, shed a good amount of blood and got beat from pillar to post by the hometown son for ten straight rounds. Immediately after the decision was announced, Dokes climbed down out of the ring and hastily stormed out through the back door of the theater and into the Colorado night.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. can also be downright surly. In May 2006, I made the honest mistake one night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas of asking him just how much money he was going to need in order to get into a ring with Oscar De La Hoya.

Floyd (pictured below) snapped that, “I don't come up into your job asking you how much you make, so don’t come up into mine asking me,” and then he went on to tell me that he was better than ’Sugar’ Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali.

So, like anything else, you learn to take the good with the bad.

And having said that I can tell you that ‘Ireland’s’ John Duddy is definitely one of the good guys.

The last time I saw Duddy was on a muggy night this past June at ‘The Castle’ in Boston, Mass., which is right up there, in my humble estimation, as one of the best fight venues there is. He had just finished pounding on Grelton, Ohio’s Charlie Howe and the immediate future looked very bright for him. Duddy fought in front of a full house of 1,500 and it was his first fight with new trainer Pat Burns. A title shot was rumored to be next.

After the fight we gathered in the makeshift dressing room in the dank and cool basement of the 117 year-old building which once served as an armory. Duddy embraced Howe and thanked him for the fight and then he dutifully began answering questions while still wearing his robe and trunks.

Duddy thoughtfully contemplated each question posed by the small collection of reporters. Blood leaked down the side of his face from a small cut over his right eye, but he was patient, and in a way, charming really. He has a boyish quality about him and he is a well-spoken and handsome young man.

So I was saddened when earlier this year I heard that he was having promotional and managerial problems with the Mcloughlin brothers of Irish Ropes Promotions. It definitely sounded as though Duddy was on the wrong end of some questionable financial dealings and that he was the latest in a long line of victims in the shady accounting practices accepted as the norm in the world of professional boxing.

But Duddy has apparently managed to break free from the clutches of his previous paymasters and on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden he makes his much anticipated return on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Michael Jennings welterweight title fight. Duddy will compete in a ten-rounder against the always tough Matt Vanda. The fight is part of a televised ‘split’ pay-per view card headlined in Youngstown, Ohio by middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik.

Now being advised by Craig Hamilton and Gary Friedman, Duddy is part of a show being promoted by Bob Arum. For a nice guy like Duddy it’s a pleasing sight to see him back where he belongs - in a boxing ring in New York City.

“It’s great to be back,” said a somewhat reserved Duddy, who seemed a bit taken aback to be introduced to the vortex of what is sometimes a very dirty business. “I’ve been away from the ring a while now and I’m looking forward to getting my career back, hopefully to a good start.”

From Derry, Northern Ireland to Times Square in New York City, Duddy sells tickets and the fans love to watch him.

With an undefeated record of 25-0 (17)KO, Duddy is also happy to be back in his old stomping grounds at Madison Square Garden. This will be his seventh fight in ‘The World’s Most Famous Arena’ which is a place where he can always be counted on to sell several thousand tickets.

“I think it’ll be a very exciting fight between me and Matt,” said Duddy through his thick Irish brogue. “I’ve seen Matt fight a few times before and I’m sure he’s seen me and as you know, the two of us, we’re full of courage and we’re full of guts. I think it’s going to be an exciting fight and I can’t wait to get the show on the road.”

Bob Arum was also quite happy to have the chance to work with Duddy. The innovative 78 year-old promoter has always been about selling tickets and Duddy is a proven commodity in that regard.

“One thing about John, if he is successful in this fight with Matt Vanda, is that he looks out at a vista of tremendous opportunities,” says Arum.

“There’s a possible fight with Yuri Foreman which would sell out Madison Square Garden. There’s Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., and if he and John are both successful in their next fights, who knows, they might be fighting as early as this summer - that’s a major, major fight. If Kelly wins Saturday night in Youngstown wouldn’t it be spectacular to have Kelly’s next middleweight title defense against John? There’s a lot of possibilities. We’re privileged to have John on this card and we think he adds a lot to this card.”

And that’s nice to hear, because John Duddy is one of the good guys.

Cocaine-Fueled Tapia Committed to Psych Ward

Five-time world champion Johnny Tapia, locked in battle once again with his cocaine demons, has been committed to the psychiatric ward of the Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

An anonymous source telephoned Tapia's long-time probation officer Tuesday morning and informed her that Tapia was using cocaine.

According to a spokesperson at the New Mexico State Department of Corrections, the probation officer then called Tapia at his home and he admitted to her that he was using cocaine which is in violation of the terms of his probation for a prior drug offense. Within hours the former champ was again behind bars.

Tapia, who turns 42 today, has essentially been retired since February 2007 when he last appeared in the ring with a 10-round majority decision win over Evaristo Primero. On a few occasions over the past two years there were rumors that Tapia was going to make a return to the fight game but the bouts never came to fruition.

A representative at the Metro Detention Center in Albuquerque would only confirm that Tapia was brought into custody Tuesday afternoon, that an evaluation was performed and that he had been admitted to the psychiatric ward. No messages are able to be passed on to him by the press.

Tapia has battled against cocaine addiction for over two decades and as a result he has had many run-ins with the law. He has been in and out of jail, rehab and hospitals on numerous occasions over the years. His life story was well documented in the 2006 book 'Mi Vida Loca' or 'My Crazy Life' written by Bettina Gilois, in which Tapia claimed he has cheated death on no less than five occasions.

A month after his last fight, Tapia overdosed in a New Mexico hotel room and slipped into a coma. As a result of that incident he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and placed on probation. He was given a second and third chance by Albuquerque Judge Kenneth H. Martinez in April 2008 and again in August 2008.

According to public records obtained by this writer, Tapia admitted to his probation officer last summer that he had done "one line of cocaine." However, at the time Judge Martinez did not feel that alone was reason enough to revoke Tapia's probation and that little good would come of incarcerating him.

Tapia claims his drug problems are the result of trying to deal with the death and memory of his mother.

Tapia's mother, Virginia, was stabbed 26 times in a brutal murder that went unsolved for over two decades. His father was also murdered in a separate incident. Tapia was eight years old at the time of his mother's death.

"I've tried to get over it in the past," said Tapia in his book of his mother's murder. "I've been on so many different kinds of medications. I've been to so many treatments and psychiatrists and therapy. It all hasn't worked. None of it. Not for the long run."

Tapia is currently being held without bond until he appears before a judge. Calls to Tapia's wife, Teresa, who also served as his manager, have not been returned.

Mayorga Says Mosley Damaged His Ribs

Nicaragua's Ricardo Mayorga points to the 'El Matador' tattoo on his neck.

Ricardo Mayorga’s withdrawal from Saturday night’s fight against Alfredo Angulo can be blamed on none other than the resurgent ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley.

Mayorga removed himself from the high-profile HBO fight against Angulo under a cloud of suspicion. In the last several days no concrete explanation had been given as to the exact reason why Mayorga suddenly decided not to go through with the match.

But now the real reason can now be revealed - Shane Mosley.

“Ever since the fight against Shane Mosley back in September I’ve had some pain in my ribs,” said ‘El Matador’ through a camp confidant. “I laid off for all that time after the Mosley fight and I thought I could work through it and train through it, but in the end it just became too much and I had to pull out.”

Mayorga said the injury was later aggravated in training for the Angulo fight and the pain has been on his right side - which is most likely the courtesy of Mosley’s left hook. Mayorga said he doesn’t believe he has a broken rib or ribs but he also said he isn’t sure as he has not undergone an x-ray.

“As training went on, the pain became sharp and sometimes very sharp, like somebody was sticking me with a knife,” he explained. “It made it very difficult to train for the fight and yes, I will admit, it made it hard for me to really focus and to concentrate and to get my weight down where it should have been.”

Mayorga gave a good account of himself against Mosley, but he was stopped in the last round and is still suffering from injured ribs.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Mayorga said there was no dispute over the purse that he was to be paid for the fight.

“No, no, no,” he said. “Don King was paying me one hundred thousand dollars for the fight and the contract was signed so that was not it. What it came down to was my ribs and that Angulo was a serious opponent. I’ve fought everyone…Trinidad, Oscar, Vargas, Mosley so I’m not afraid. I don’t pull out of fights. Go back and look and you’ll see that I don’t pull out of fights.”

Mayorga’s attorney and advisor Tony Gonzalez supported Mayorga’s explanation. Gonzalez told the Miami Herald that, “He got hurt about three weeks ago and still wanted to make every effort to fight Angulo. But at this stage of his career, it would be too much of a risk if he’s not completely healed.”

Mayorga said he was disappointed with having to withdraw from the Angulo fight, but he said if people were looking to blame someone, he knows just who to point the finger at:

“Mosley,” he said. “You can blame Mosley, it’s all his fault.”

An Unknown Emerges from the Dark Continent

As sometimes happens in the bizarre world of professional boxing, an unknown mandatory challenger to one of the alphabet soup title belts is about to step out from the hinterlands and into the spotlight.

The one thing these mysterious #1 contenders all seem to have in common is their peculiar names, glittering records - and the fact that few folks outside the friendly confines of their native country have ever seen them before.

Such is the case for one Ali Funeka, who has emerged from the dark shadows of South Africa and will challenge lightweight champ Nate Campbell in Sunrise, Florida next Saturday night.

Hailing from a town called Mdantsane, the unknown Funeka is from a line of people that were forcibly removed from what was then known as ‘East Bank’ in East London, South Africa due that nation’s former apartheid policy. Much of the populace from Funeka’s township scrape by in extreme poverty and are stricken with a host of contagious diseases from HIV to hepatitis.

Funeka’s life was one of similar struggle as his mother passed away when he was very young and he was raised by relatives. When he first began to learn how to throw punches as a young boy in the dusty and hopeless setting, he did so with empty milk cartons on his hands in place of boxing gloves.

With a record of 30-1-2 (25)KO’s, Funeka is ranked in the top spot according to the International Boxing Federation, but he has never fought outside of his native South Africa. His fights have taken place in venues with names such as the Red Cross Hall, the Oliver Tambo Sport Centre and the Nasrec Indoor Arena. The guess would be that those places don’t look much like Madison Square Garden in New York City or the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

Thus far, Funeka has toiled away in relative obscurity. But on Saturday night he'll be fighting Nate Campbell for the lightweight championship of the world.

Take a look down through Funeka’s list of opposition and you see a whole lot of names that contain so many more consonants than vowels that you need a lesson of ‘Hooked-on-Phonics’ simply to pronounce them. You also see that Funeka’s primary claim to fame is that he was once the proud holder of the South African super featherweight title - which is probably akin to being the heavyweight champ of Oklahoma.

But the one thing on the 31 year-old Ali Funeka’s pro ledger that is interesting and does make you raise your eyebrows a little bit is that he destroyed Philadelphia’s Zahir Raheem in four rounds when the two met in an IBF title eliminator last July in South Africa. It was the first time Raheem had ever been knocked out despite the fact that he had faced big punchers such as Erik Morales, Acelino Freitas and Rocky Juarez.

Funeka is a monster of a lightweight at 6’1” tall. His long arms would keep a middleweight at bay and his high defense and good head movement frustrate his smaller opponents. Funeka is an aggressive fighter who actively marches ahead behind quick left jabs. The style allows him to keep his opponents at long range and on the end of his sneaky right hand which was responsible for the stunning victory over Raheem who was drilled to the deck four times before finally going down and out in the 4th. It was as complete a victory as you will see and it sent a message that Funeka could be a serious threat to Campbell on Saturday night.

Trained by former longtime IBF super bantamweight champ Vuyani Bungu, Funeka goes by the nickname ’Rush Hour’ and he went 96-22 on the South African amateur circuit before turning pro 14 years ago. He comes from a long line of top prizefighters that have plied their trade in South Africa.

As the 25 knockouts in 30 wins would attest, Funeka has above average punching power - especially early in a fight - as 21 of his 25 knockouts have come within the first five rounds. But he, too, is susceptible to what comes back at him as he has been down three times in his career and always in the 1st or 2nd round.

A husband and father of two daughters, Funeka recently signed some sort of promotional contract with American promoter Gary Shaw. The fight against Campbell is part of what Don King is calling the ‘St. Valentine’s Day Massacre’ and will be televised by HBO. The fight has now been elevated to main event status after Ricardo Mayorga hastily pulled out of his fight against Alfredo Angulo at the eleventh hour.

Funeka, who sports a shaved head with a long scruff of hair on his chin for a beard, says he is more than ready for the fight against Campbell and feels no apprehension in fighting in Campbell’s home state of Florida.

“I'm glad the fight is taking place in America because that's where I want to introduce myself,” Funeka told South Africa’s Dispatch On-line. “I'm at my physical peak and I don’t see anyone in the lightweight division stopping me. I can take them all in one night.”

Campbell, the outspoken lightweight champ known as the ‘Galaxxy Warrior’ is also in the dark along with the rest of the boxing world when it comes to knowing about who Funeka is. But he claims he doesn’t spend too much time worrying about it.

“He expects that my lack of knowledge about him will concern me, but it doesn’t,” said the always engaging and self-assured Campbell. “It’s no different than being an amateur fighter and walking in and fighting somebody else. I know how to fight, so what he has to do is do what he does - and I’ll do what I do.”

In fact, Funeka is such an unknown commodity that many sports books are not offering odds on the fight - because they have no idea who Funeka even is or what kind of hand he will be able to bring to the table.

Nate Campbell from Jacksonville, Florida is the recognized Lightweight Champion of the World. Has has a tall order in front of him for a Valentine's Day clash.

Campbell, a 36 year-old veteran with a record of 32-5-1 (25)KO’s, is making the first defense of his championship and is as good a trash talker as he is a fighter.

“Funeka is stupid enough to believe that he can beat me, which I like because it means I‘ll get a fight,” says Nate as he shrugs and smirks. “I’m gonna’ beat him like he stole somethin’ and I’m gonna’ do things to him that border on criminal. When Funeka gets here, I’m gonna’ hit that 6’1” tall body everywhere that’s legal. And if the referee ain’t lookin’ - a few places that ain’t.”

While that is yet to be decided, what is certain is that Ali Funeka and Nate Campbell will likely both do what they do and if the mysterious South African manages to do his thing a little better - he’ll be unknown no more.

Deadly Sins of Negative Thinking

The way to overcome negative thoughts and destructive emotions is to develop opposing, positive emotions that are stronger and more powerful.” - Dalai Lama

Life could be so much better for many people, if they would just spot their negative thinking habits and replace them with positive ones.

Negative thinking, in all its many-splendored forms, has a way of creeping into conversations and our thinking without our noticing them. The key to success, in my humble opinion, is learning to spot these thoughts and squash them like little bugs. Then replace them with positive ones. You’ll notice a huge difference in everything you do.

Let’s take a look at 10 common ways that negative thinking emerges — get good at spotting these patterns, and practice replacing them with positive thinking patterns. It has made all the difference in the world for me.

10 Deadly Sins of Negative Thinking

1. I will be happy once I have _____ (or once I earn X).

Problem: If you think you can’t be happy until you reach a certain point, or until you reach a certain income, or have a certain type of house or car or computer setup, you’ll never be happy. That elusive goal is always just out of reach. Once we reach those goals, we are not satisfied — we want more.

Solution: Learn to be happy with what you have, where you are, and who you are, right at this moment. Happiness doesn’t have to be some state that we want to get to eventually — it can be found right now. Learn to count your blessings, and see the positive in your situation. This might sound simplistic, but it works.
2. I wish I were as ____ as (a celebrity, friend, co-worker).

Problem: We’ll never be as pretty, as talented, as rich, as sculpted, as cool, as everyone else. There will always be someone better, if you look hard enough. Therefore, if we compare ourselves to others like this, we will always pale, and will always fail, and will always feel bad about ourselves. This is no way to be happy.

Solution: Stop comparing yourself to others, and look instead at yourself — what are your strengths, your accomplishments, your successes, however small? What do you love about yourself? Learn to love who you are, right now, not who you want to become. There is good in each of us, love in each of us, and a wonderful human spirit in every one of us.

3. Seeing others becoming successful makes me jealous and resentful.

Problem: First, this assumes that only a small number of people can be successful. In truth, many, many people can be successful — in different ways.

Solution: Learn to admire the success of others, and learn from it, and be happy for them, by empathizing with them and understanding what it must be like to be them. And then turn away from them, and look at yourself — you can be successful too, in whatever you choose to do. And even more, you already are successful. Look not at those above you in the social ladder, but those below you — there are always millions of people worse off than you, people who couldn’t even read this article or afford a computer. In that light, you are a huge success.

4. I am a miserable failure — I can’t seem to do anything right.

Problem: Everyone is a failure, if you look at it in certain ways. Everyone has failed, many times, at different things. I have certainly failed so many times I cannot count them — and I continue to fail, daily. However, looking at your failures as failures only makes you feel bad about yourself. By thinking in this way, we will have a negative self-image and never move on from here.

Solution: See your successes and ignore your failures. Look back on your life, in the last month, or year, or 5 years. And try to remember your successes. If you have trouble with this, start documenting them — keep a success journal, either in a notebook or online. Document your success each day, or each week. When you look back at what you’ve accomplished, over a year, you will be amazed. It’s an incredibly positive feeling.

5. I’m going to beat so-and-so no matter what — I’m better than him. And there’s no way I’ll help him succeed — he might beat me.

Problem: Competitiveness assumes that there is a small amount of gold to be had, and I need to get it before he does. It makes us into greedy, back-stabbing, hurtful people. We try to claw our way over people to get to success, because of our competitive feelings. For example, if a blogger wants to have more subscribers than another blogger, he may never link to or mention that other blogger. However, who is to say that my subscribers can’t also be yours? People can read and subscribe to more than one blog.

Solution: Learn to see success as something that can be shared, and learn that if we help each other out, we can each have a better chance to be successful. Two people working towards a common goal are better than two people trying to beat each other up to get to that goal. There is more than enough success to go around. Learn to think in terms of abundance rather than scarcity.

6. Dammit! Why do these bad things always happen to me?

Problem: Bad things happen to everybody. If we dwell on them, they will frustrate us and bring us down.

Solution: See bad things as a part of the ebb and flow of life. Suffering is a part of the human condition — but it passes. All pain goes away, eventually. Meanwhile, don’t let it hold you back. Don’t dwell on bad things, but look forward towards something good in your future. And learn to take the bad things in stride, and learn from them. Bad things are actually opportunities to grow and learn and get stronger, in disguise.

7. You can’t do anything right! Why can’t you be like ____ ?

Problem: This can be said to your child or your subordinate or your sibling. The problem? Comparing two people, first of all, is always a fallacy. People are different, with different ways of doing things, different strengths and weaknesses, different human characteristics. If we were all the same, we’d be robots. Second, saying negative things like this to another person never helps the situation. It might make you feel better, and more powerful, but in truth, it hurts your relationship, it will actually make you feel negative, and it will certainly make the other person feel negative and more likely to continue negative behavior. Everyone loses.

Solution: Take the mistakes or bad behavior of others as an opportunity to teach. Show them how to do something. Second, praise them for their positive behavior, and encourage their success. Last, and most important, love them for who they are, and celebrate their differences.

8. Your work sucks. It’s super lame. You are a moron and I hope you never reproduce.

Problem: I’ve actually gotten this comment before. It feels wonderful. However, let’s look at it not from the perspective of the person receiving this kind of comment but from the perspective of the person giving it. How does saying something negative like this help you? I guess it might feel good to vent if you feel like your time has been wasted. But really, how much of your time has been wasted? A few minutes? And whose fault is that? The bloggers or yours? In truth, making negative comments just keeps you in a negative mindset. It’s also not a good way to make friends.

Solution: Learn to offer constructive solutions, first of all. Instead of telling someone their blog sucks, or that a post is lame, offer some specific suggestions for improvement. Help them get better. If you are going to take the time to make a comment, make it worth your time. Second, learn to interact with people in a more positive way — it makes others feel good and it makes you feel better about yourself. And you can make some great friends this way. That’s a good thing.

9. Insulting People Back

Problem: If someone insults you or angers you in some way, insulting them back and continuing your anger only transfers their problem to you. This person was probably having a bad day (or a bad year) and took it out on you for some reason. If you reciprocate, you are now having a bad day too. His problem has become yours. Not only that, but the cycle of insults can get worse and worse until it results in violence or other negative consequences — for both of you.

Solution: Let the insults or negative comments of others slide off you like Teflon. Don’t let their problem become yours. In fact, try to understand their problem more — why would someone say something like that? What problems are they going through? Having a little empathy for someone not only makes you understand that their comment is not about you, but it can make you feel and act in a positive manner towards them — and make you feel better about yourself in the process.

10. I don’t think I can do this — I don’t have enough discipline. Maybe some other time.

Problem: If you don’t think you can do something, you probably won’t. Especially for the big stuff. Discipline has nothing to do with it — motivation and focus has everything to do with it. And if you put stuff off for “some other time”, you’ll never get it done. Negative thinking like this inhibits us from accomplishing anything.

Solution: Turn your thinking around: you can do this! You don’t need discipline. Find ways to make yourself a success at your goal. If you fail, learn from your mistakes, and try again. Instead of putting a goal off for later, start now. And focus on one goal at a time, putting all of your energy into it, and getting as much help from others as you can. You can really move mountains if you start with positive thinking.
