KO Digest was live at the famous Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA for what promised to be an exciting evening of professional boxing. The card, billed as Broadway Boxing, was promoted by DiBella Entertainment and featured several local fighters including Worcester's own Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriquez, an undefeated super middlweight with a record of 18-0 w/ 13 KOs.
On my way in through downtown Worcester, I noticed many cars full of obvious Rodriquez fans, blaring their music, and waving Dominican Republic flags in support of their local fighter, Rodriguez. I also noticed many fans wearing shirts that read "The Polish Prince”, in support of another local fighter, a kid named Ryan Kielczewski, a junior lightweight from Quincy, MA.
It's good to see boxing fans supporting their favorite local fighters.
Broadway Boxing Results:
Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriquez TKO2 Chris Traietti
(Super Middleweights)
MAIN EVENT!
The crowd is VERY excited for their local hero, Edwin Rodriguez.
"La Bomba" lands two big rights in the first and has Traietti reeling. Traietti went to the body pretty well in the second but Rodriguez returned fire to the body and landed some brutal shots of his own including a vicious right to the body that caused a nasty red welt on the abdomen of Traietti. The effect of the blow carried somewhat of a delayed effect and caused Traietti to retire on his stool and he did not come out for the third round, apparently having trouble breathing. A good bodyshot can do that and the one he got hit with was a Bomba! Rodriquez, trained by Ronnie Shields and rated variously by various governing bodies, improves to 19-0 w/ 14 KOs while Traietti falls to 10-3 w/ 6 KOs.
Rodriquez looks like a good, young up and coming fighter.
Ryan Kielczewski W8 James Lester
(Junior Lightweights)
Kielczewski, an undefeated prospect from Quincy, MA is known as "The Polish Prince" and had many supporters in Worcester tonight. The Prince got a rousing loud response from the crowd when he came to the ring and was introduced. Lester went to the body early and often and The Prince would respond by taking the bodyshots and then pinning Lester on the ropes or in a corner where he punched away at Lester with no great effect. Finally in the 6th, the Quincy native put some power in his right hand and he dropped Lester twice, Lester taking a knee both times. Lester again took a knee in the 7th, in a corner, the result of a body punch. Both fighters went all out in the 8th, and Kielczewski landed some good right hands but Lester held on to the final bell. Kielczewski wins a unanimous decision by scores of 80-69, 79-70, and 79-70. He improves to 11-0 w/ 2 KOs while Lester fell to 9-6 w/ 4 KOs. .
Joachim Alcine D8 Jose Medina
(Middleweights)
Former WBA junior middlweight champion Alcine was looking to bounce back from a KO loss to Alfredo Angulo in his last fight and he appeared to get the job done tonight despite getting all he can handle form Quincy native Jose Medina, a fighter with a reputation for upsets. The problem with Medina was that he threw just as many pawing punches as solid ones and he holds his left very low. Alcine landed the best punch of the night, a looping right in the 6th that crashed off the head of Medina and got the crowd's attention as well as Medina's. The scores were 78-75 for Alcine, 78-74 for Medina, and 76-76 even, resulting in a surprising split draw. KO Digest scored the fight in favor of Alcine, 77-75. Alcine goes to 32-2-1 w/ 19 KOs and Medina goes to 14-9-3 w/ 6 KOs.
Luis Rosa W6 Shawn Nichol
(Super Bantamweights)
Rosa won a hard fought unanimous decision over the game Nichol, who acquitted himself very well as an opponent for Rosa. The fight was entertaining and appeared closer in the ring than it was on the cards. Rosa won by scores of 59-55 across the board and he improves to 8-0 w/ 5 KO's while Nichol falls to 5-6 w/ 5 KOs.
Kelvin Price W6 Joseph Rabotte
(Heavyweights)
The tall and rangy Price used his jab effectively for six rounds and won an easy though unanimous boring decision over perennial opponent Joseph Rabotte. Scores were 60-54, 60-54, and 60-55. Rabotte stepped on the gas in the final ten seconds of the fight, but by then it was way too late. Price improves to 11-0 w/ 6 KOs while Rabotte falls to 11-17-1 w/ 3 KOs
Gabriel Duluc W4 Noel Garcia
(Junior Welterweights)
Worcester native Duluc improves to 2-0 w/ 1 KO in winning every round against the game but over-matched Garcia. Duluc controlled the first two rounds with good boxing and occasional power shots. He began to find a home for his right in the 3rd and 4th and he hit Garcia flush several times, but Garcia hung in there to hear the final bell. Garcia falls to 2-11 w/ 1 KO. All three judges scored the fight 40-36 for Duluc, winner by unanimous decision.
Sonya Lamonakis W6 Tiffany Woodard
(Female Heavyweights)
Local heroine Sonya Lamonakis is a crowd favorite with an all action style. She went toe to toe for most of this fight against Tiffany Woodard, who gave as good as she got in this entertaining slugfest. It's no wonder the fans love Sonya, she is like the female Butterbean, in pink boxing trucks. Sonya wins a majority decision by scores of 59-55, 58-56, and 57-57. Lamonakis improves to 6-0 w/ 1 KO while Woodard falls to 4-5-1 w/ 3 KOs.
