Illinois Woman Injects Beef Fat into Face (BLOG)

Beef: It's what's for dinner - or a fatal do-it-yourself spa treatment.

Or so went the logic of one 63-year-old Illinois woman, who injected hot beef fat into her face, was brought to the hospital, and died shortly thereafter, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

The woman, Janet Hardt, injected hot beef fat around her mouth and chin, a practice those close to her say she has done on multiple occasions. Why? The initial reports don't give any indication as to what prompted this dangerous routine, though one might presume that it was some sort of wrinkle-reduction or anti-aging routine.

The injections caused infections in her face, but those did not contribute to her death. The autopsy reports say that Hardt died of peritonitis, "a severe abdominal inflammation caused by a bacterial infection suffered because of weakened walls in her colon."

Unfortunately, Hardt isn't the only one who has done baffling things in the name of beauty.

A Woman's Day article outlines at least 10 bizarre beauty treatments that run the gamut from fish pedicures to chocolate body wraps.

Perhaps the creepiest such treatment involves a snake treatment at Ada Barak's spa in Northern Israel.

To reap the benefits of this treatment, patients allow a pile of snakes to slither on their backs and tickle them, while masseuses knead knots and tangles out of muscles in a more traditional fashion.

A more palatable treatment listed in the article would pair quite well with Hardt's beef fat: A red wine pool.

At the Yunessen Spa in Japan, visitors may bathe in tub of the antioxidant-rich drink, which is said to firm skin and reduce the effects of aging and sun damage. No word on whether the tannins stain light skin the same way they do teeth.
