Motorola’s Droid Bionic has been among the most anticipated smartphone launches this year. The manufacturer built up plenty of hype with a video teaser earlier this summer, and now the Android phone has finally arrived. HTC may soon have a couple of new smartphones out too, with the Amaze and Holiday outed over the weekend. Lenovo’s also shaking up the tablet market with another affordable device designed for the masses.
Motorola DROID Bionic
The wait is over for the Motorola Droid Bionic, as the smartphone hit stores September 8th. It will cost you $299 at Verizon (with a contract), but the mobile manufacturer is hoping that you won’t put the credit card away just yet. The Bionic comes with an array of accessories, including the 11.6-inch Lapdock, which costs another $299. A concept Motorola introduced at CES this year, the Lapdock turns your Smartphone into a “laptop computer” with a full keyboard and a large screen. The Bionic also comes with Zumocast, a personal cloud app from Motorola.
The Bionic isn’t the first Motorola smartphone to come with a Lapdock. The Atrix 4G and Photon 4G featured the accompanying keyboard as well. But the Bionic is a head above its siblings as far as hardware goes, with 4G LTE support and a dual-core 1GHz processor. That makes it one speedy smartphone, with speeds of up to 12Mbps for downloads, and 5Mbps for uploads. Running on the latest version of Android (Gingerbread 2.3.4), the Bionic also comes with 32GB of storage between internal and external microSD support. The Bionic’s rear-facing camera is 8-megapixels, with support for 1080p HD video (there’s a front-facing camera for video chats as well). The most notable disappointment with the Bionic is its display, which has a lower resolution than competitors at 960x540 pixels.
HTC Amaze 4G
This HTC smartphone has yet to be announced, but the Android device was spotted in the wild over the holiday weekend. The HTC Amaze, along with the Holiday (see below) are both poised to be strong contenders in this autumn’s raging smartphone market, with great hardware specs and high expectations. Rumor has it that the HTC Amaze 4G will be available for T-Mobile customers on October 26th, the same day the Samsung Galaxy S II will hit stores. Previously known by its code name the HTC Ruby, the Amaze 4G is expected to feature a 4.3-inch qHD (960x540 pixel) display, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and an 8-megapixel camera. With the Amaze 4G you’ll also get 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.
HTC Holiday
Spied over the holiday weekend, the HTC Holiday is also expected to be a speedy smartphone, pulling nearly 30Mbps download speeds. It’s an indication that the Holiday supports AT&T’s 4G LTE network, which would make it one of the fastest on the market. The Holiday is rumored to have a 4.5-inch qHD display, a dualcore 1.2GHz processor and an 8-megapixel camera, confirmed by a recent Boy Genius Report source. Expected to run Android Gingerbread 2.3.4, the HTC Holiday is also likely to sport HTC’s custom user interface, Sense 3.0.
Lenovo A1
While smartphones are preparing for a fall comeback, tablets are still heating up Android’s gadget scene. Lenovo, known for affordability, is presenting a budget-friendly Android tablet for the general consumer population (availability has yet to be announced). Priced comfortably at $250, the 7-inch tablet runs Android 2.3. There’s also a well-proportioned screen resolution at 1,024x600 pixels, dual cameras (3-megapixel rear-facing and VGA for the front), a capacitive multitouch screen and Bluetooth support, running on a 1GHz Arm Cortex A8 processor. Another perk is the GPS format, which isn’t dependent on an Internet connection. That broadens your location-based services a bit, making the Lenovo A1 a well thought-out device for the price point.
