Only a Scandal Can Save Hopkins vs. Jones II

Roy Jones, Jr. (left) and Bernard Hopkins will meet in April - 17 years after their first fight.

If a fight happens and no one is there to see it - is it still a fight?

That's the question many are asking as Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones, Jr. prepare to meet again on April 3 in Las Vegas. Never mind that Hopkins is 45-years-old and Jones is 41. Never mind that Jones was starched in one round a couple of months ago by Australia's Danny Green.

Their big fight on April 3 is being billed as "The Rivals" - but unless something happens soon, the Mandalay Bay Events Center is going to be an empty vessel. Not many will be pressing the "buy" button on their television remote controls and Golden Boy Promotions may have to seriously consider pulling the plug on this entire ill-fated affair.

Besides the fact their first bout, way back in 1993, was enough to put a meth addict to sleep, this fight couldn't be happening at a more inopportune time.

This bout is sandwiched in between two huge pay-per-view affairs featuring Manny Pacquiao versus Joshua Clottey on March 13 and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. versus Shane Mosley on May 1. Both of thoe affairs have fifty-dollar price tags attached to them.

In this economy, what boxing fan has the confidence to shell out over $150 in pay-per-view costs in a span of seven weeks? Furthermore, were a fan considering attending one of these three fights in person, certainly Pacquiao-Clottey at Jerry Jones' lavish Cowboys Stadium is already a winner since over 30,000 tickets have been purchased.

Hopkins (left) and Jones were all business during the press tour to hype their upcoming rematch.

It is likely that boxing fans are apt to skip the April 3 bout in Las Vegas featuring Hopkins and Jones and wait instead, to see Mayweather and Mosley on May 1.

Neither Hopkins or Jones has much of a following in the southwest. Jones is from Florida, Hopkins is from Philadelphia. On the other hand, Mayweather is a Las Vegas resident as well as a bonafide attraction on "The Strip". Moley is from California. As a result, their fight should sell very well in Sin City.

Another factor here is that Mayweather vs. Mosley is considered a very competitive match-up. Both men also have very good name recognition with the mainstream public. While Hopkins and Jones also possess name recognition, they are more curiosities at this point in their careers. Most ask - "Are those two still fighting?"

So, what can save the Hopkins vs. Jones promotion from total implosion?

Well, both guys have been in the game for many, many years. Hopkins turned pro in 1988 and Jones in 1989. They both are well aware of the state of the economy, the state of boxing and both are aware that fans view them as tired, old warhorses and virtual museum relics. In short, these guys know the business side of the sport as well as anyone.

You remember what took place when Hopkins faced Winky Wright in a similarly tough sell in July 2007?

Hopkins confronted Wright at the officail weigh-in, words were exchanged and Hopkins pushed Wright's face with his hand. That resulted in an all out melee. But Hopkins was intelligent enough to know this would make the reruns of SportsCenter as well as be the footnote to nightly newscasts across the country. It would also make headlines in newspapers around the world.

Hopkins (left) attempted to drum up interest in his bout with Winky Wright by placing his hand on Wright's face and giving it a shove.

Some called Hopkins, "Crazy like a fox" because he was aware this behavior would likely result in more pay-per-view purchases. It was a contrived and calculated action in order to help shore up the shaky bottom line. Hopkins even noted that he only did what he did to to aid the pay-per-view. He miscalculated because the Nevada State Athletic Commission fined him $200,000 - but it was worth a try.

So, don't be surprised if something scandalous takes place within the next several weeks - certainly before April 3.

Maybe some sort of rumor or innuendo. Maybe some sort of something that will make you click on an Internet link, leave the channel on SportsCenter until after the break or make you pick up the newspaper so you can turn to the sports page.

Both Hopkins and Jones are aware this fight is drowning in its own sea of indifference and that it needs something (a scandal perhaps?) to make people pay attention to it. The fight needs something to garner attention from the two fights that are squeezing the money from it on both ends.

Maybe steroids? Maybe Tiger Woods like infidelity? Maybe the fact that Bernard Hopkins is injecting Geritol and Roy Jones, Jr. is ingesting Centrum Silver?

I don't know. But it's going to take some sort of contrived, newsworthy item for boxing fans to shell out bucks for this one.

Otherwise, there could be a fight on April 3 - and nobody will be there to see it.

David Tua Hunting for Big Game

David Tua (right) will square off against Friday Ahunanya next month in Auckland, New Zealand.

David Tua is likely the best heavyweight in the past 15 years to have never actually won a heavyweight title belt.

And it hasn’t been from a lack of trying.

Tua has beaten former heavyweight titlists Johnny Ruiz, Oleg Maskaev, Hasim Rahman and Michael Moorer. He even dispatched Ruiz and Moorer in less than a round.

Call it bad luck or call it something else if you want, but in a prizefighting career that began 18 years ago, David Tua has only managed to get one shot at a heavyweight belt. It came against Lennox Lewis in 2000, but the Samoan was soundly defeated in a boring distance fight.

So in a sport where title shots are handed out like Halloween candy; How come David Tua, a deserving, capable and entertaining fighter has never received as many title chances as say James Toney, Johnny Ruiz, Hasim Rahman or Oleg Maskaev?

Trying to answer that question is like trying to solve The Riddle of the Sphinx and at age 37, Tua has stopped trying to figure it all out. He resumed his career in October of last year with a devastating knockout win over Shane Cameron in Auckland, New Zealand and he hopes to get back in the thick of things this year.

The win was the just the jumpstart that he sorely needed and he is hoping to build on the momentum of that electrifying victory in 2010. The WBO has him ranked in the #3 contender position, so as long as he continues to win he will likely get another shot.

Tua is a tree trunk of a heavyweight who is nearly as wide as he is tall. When he is in condition his punches can be destructive.

Tua will square off against perennial heavyweight gatekeeper Friday “The 13th” Ahunanya on March 31 in Auckland. Tua believes a win over the Nigerian may put him back into focus in the blurry heavyweight title picture.

“If all goes well, I reckon that it should make enough noise for us to hopefully then get a title shot,” says the thickly built Tua who stands only 5-foot-10 and weighs in the neighborhood of 240 pounds.

Not lost on Tua is the fact that Ruiz, Maskaev and Rahman all went on to win portions of the heavyweight crown. But the one that really stings is Ruiz. Tua destroyed him in 19 seconds but Ruiz went on to become a two-time WBA heavyweight titlist. It is also Ruiz that will meet current WBA title holder David Haye on April 3. Tua and his braintrust would love to get the winner of that fight.

Dean Lonergan, of New Zealand’s Duco Events, is working with Tua in promoting next month’s bout against Ahunanya. The thought of getting Haye or Ruiz in the ring makes him very excited.

“Haye has said that Ruiz is going to be a tricky fight, he’s only been knocked out once,” says Lonergan. “Well the only person who knocked out John Ruiz once was David Tua in fifteen seconds. So it’s fair to say that the two combatants on April 3, I think, would be easy meat for David Tua. And they’d be perfect opponents for David Tua regardless of who wins that fight, because David Haye, in particular, he’s just a blown-up cruiserweight and I think David Tua would destroy him.”

Tua pounds away on the bag while being watched by his trainer, Roger Bloodworth.

Tua totally dismantled Shane Cameron in October. When he backed Cameron to the ropes he unloaded with a blistering fusillade of punches that were rapid, quick and totally debilitating. Cameron was rendered completely senseless. For many, it brought back all of the memories of what made Tua one of the most promising heavyweight prospects in the decade of the 90s.

Roger Bloodworth, Tua’s trainer, also feels that 2010 could be the year of the “Tuaman” and he believes that he sees something in his man that could not only get him to a title shot this year - but could see him win it, too.

“Really, there is nobody in boxing right now that punches like David,” says Bloodworth.

After long stretches of inactivity over the past decade and sporadic stops and starts (he didn’t fight at all in 2004 or 2008) Tua, whose record stands at 50-3-1 (43)KO, feels that he is now back on track. He’s of the mindset that if he gets another title chance, this time he’ll be ready.

“Oh, without a doubt, without a doubt,” he declares and then grins. “I’ll be more ready now than the first time. Whoever holds the title is who I want. Whoever and whenever. I think for us, the most important thing is to be ready for it.”

David Tua is back in the hunt.

Pacquiao Alone Atop Pound for Pound Throne

Manny Pacquiao is universally regarded as the best boxer on the face of the planet.

Over the past several years, the sport of boxing and its fans have become obsessed with the pound for pound rankings. In the not too distant past, it was rare that one even heard the term mentioned.

In the decade of the 1980s, when boxing had superstars such as Roberto Duran, Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Wilfred Benitez, Aaron Pryor, Larry Holmes and many other excellent fighters - the notion of just who was the best fighter in the world - was never discussed.

Pick up an old boxing magazine from the 80s and there is no mention in there of a pound for pound best boxer and there are no rankings that sort out such a thing.

But the world has changed. In 2010, most everyone has an opinion about who ranks where and lists and rankings are closely watched.

(1.) Manny Pacquiao - Without question he deserves the top spot. His competition has been very strong and with victories over names such as Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Juan Manuel Marquez there is a clear divide between Pacquiao and his next closest rival. Next: March 13 vs. Joshua Clottey.

(2.) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. - In his next bout versus Shane Mosley, Mayweather could make a huge statement with a win. Mosley will be the most significant threat that Floyd has faced in many years. A win, especially if it is very convincing, just may be enough to vault him to the top position. Next: May 1 vs. Shane Mosley.

(3.) Arthur Abraham - Undefeated at 31-0 (25) KO, he is in his prime at age 30 and is the leader of the Showtime Super Six World Boxing Classic. He held the IBF middleweight title for 4 1/2 years and 10 successful defenses. His most recent knockout win over Jermain Taylor was complete and thorough. Abraham is a strong puncher who possesses solid boxing skills. Next: March 27 vs. Andre Dirrell.

Germany's "King" Arthur Abraham (left) registers in at #3 in the world and is a dangerous puncher.

(4.) Bernard Hopkins - At 45-years-old, Hopkins is a freak of nature. Although he has fought infrequently over the past couple of years he has still maintained his excellent boxing skills. While he is not exciting to watch - he is effective - and that's really the bottom line. Next: April 3 vs. Roy Jones, Jr.

(5.) Shane Mosley - At 38-years-old he is coming off a huge Jan. 2009 win over Antonio Margarito. The win was enough to rejuvenate his career and keep him highly ranked on the pound-for-pound lists. He is the decided underdog in the bout against Mayweather - but nobody figured he would beat Margarito either. Next: May 1 vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

(6.) Chris John - I rate the WBA featherweight titlist from Indonesia higher than most anybody else for several reasons. In a prizefighting career that has spanned 12 years, the 30-year-old is undefeated at 43-0-2 (22)KO. He is one of the rare fighters that has spent his entire fistic life in the same weight division, which demonstrates his dedication and discipline. He holds a signature win over Juan Manuel Marquez from 2006. John picked up the interim WBA 126-pound title in July 2003 - nearly 7 years ago - and has defended the belt 11 times. He has also avenged the two draws on his record with wins. Next: TBA.

(7.) Wladimir Klitschko - With a record of 53-3 (47)KO, the IBF/WBO heavyweight champ has put up solid numbers in career that began 14 years ago. While he has suffered a few shock losses, he has managed to come back stronger after each one of them. Over the years he has made 12 title defenses of his various belts after having won his first title from Chris Byrd nearly a decade ago. He is unbeaten since 2004 and his two reigns as a belt holder have lasted over 6 years. Next: March 20 vs. Eddie Chambers.

Wladimir Klitschko holds many of the world heavyweight belts and has been around for a while.

(8.) Paul Williams - Coming off a very tough win over Sergio Martinez this past December, Williams is at a career crossroads. He needs to make a decision as to whether he is going to fight at 147, 154 or 160 and make a serious attempt to get in the ring with names such as Mayweather, Mosley, Pacquiao and Cotto. Next: May 8, TBA.

(9.) Chad Dawson - Needs to fight someone his own age as has only fought Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson (both 40-ish) in the past couple of years. One of the most promising fighters in the world under age 30. Holds signature wins over Tarver, Johnson and Tomasz Adamek. Undefeated at 29-0 (17)KO, the southpaw has supreme boxing skills and has already won two light heavyweight belts. Reminds me of a young Larry Holmes. Next: June 19, TBA, likely Jean Pascal.

(10.) Timothy Bradley - Just scored the biggest win of his career in December with a convincing decision win over the previously unbeaten Lamont Peterson. The 26-year-old won the WBC title in England over Junior Witter in 2008 and has followed up with impressive wins over solid names such as Edner Cherry and Kendall Holt. Has already won the WBC and WBO 140-pound titles. Appeared to be on his way to a win over Nate Campbell before the bout was declared a no-contest. Next: June 5, TBA.

Is L.A. a safe haven for Manny Pacquiao?

Pacquiao pictured recently at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

Many of you may have read the story that two of Manny Pacquiao’s campaign aides were assassinated last month in his home province of Sarangani in the Philippines. They were gunned down while laying the groundwork for the pound-for-pound champ’s congressional run in the upcoming May elections.

While the political game here in the United States is serious - politics in the Philippines is a very serious game - deadly serious. The fight for control of the political process in the country is more savage than any opponent Pacquiao has ever met in the squared circle.

When Pacquiao is at home in the Philippines, he is guarded around the clock by a phalanx of bodyguards that look critically at anyone that approaches. They also tote machine guns. Pacquiao’s palatial home is cordoned off by high fences and nobody is allowed into the compound unless they are first cleared by security.

The threat of kidnapping, robbery and extortion is a daily concern for Pacquiao, his wife Jinkee and their entire family. Such is life when you are one of the most wealthy individuals in a country mired in poverty and characterized by hopelessness. The average per capita monthly income for a Filipino is a lowly $275. Manny Pacquiao earned upwards of $40 million in 2009.

But life is different when Manny comes to California.

He is extremely accessible when he does his training runs in the Hollywood Hills with his pet Jack Russell Terrier attentively trotting alongside. Pretty much anyone can walk up to Manny and obtain his autograph. Hang around outside Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym on Vine Street in Hollywood and you are guaranteed to get up close to the “Pac-Man”. Manny likes to play pick-up games of basketball and he attracts large crowds that strain to get close to him. Pretty much anybody can get in on the action if they so desire.

No matter where he goes, the world's top pound-for-pound fighter always attracts large crowds.

So you can probably understand there are some who fear for his safety as he trains in Los Angeles for his upcoming bout on March 13 against Joshua Clottey.

“We think about it, but we try not to think about it, that stuff, when we are here in L.A.,” a member of Team Pacquiao recently told me. “When we are here we think about making sure everything is okay for Manny and that he has what he needs so that he can win. We keep it loose, keep it fun and try to keep his mind off the things that could happen.”

Surely if anybody wanted to get to Manny, who is as happy-go-lucky a person as you will ever meet, here in America would be an easier place than at home in the Philippines.

“Yes, when we are here, the guns, they go away. We don‘t need ‘em,” said the Pacquiao confidant. “We don’t worry here. Here, everybody loves Manny.”

It is the job of Rob Peters to keep a watchful eye on Pacquiao when he is in Los Angeles. Peters ensures that Manny safely makes it to all of his engagements - including the fight. It is Peters that barks at those in the parking lot of the Wild Card Gym that try to park where they aren’t supposed to or make attempts to barge in on Pacquiao’s training sessions. It is Peters that stands watch outside the door of Nat’s Thai Food restaurant - a hole in the wall just steps from the gym where Manny routinely consumes his post-workout meal.

With hundreds of people milling about outside the gym, Peters sometimes loses his temper in his effort to balance the needs of Manny’s adoring fans- along with Manny’s desire to accommodate their autograph and picture requests.

After he destroyed Oscar De La Hoya in Dec. 2008, Pacquiao's popularity surged to new heights.

“You know, it’s always the same, the same as it always is when Manny is here,” says a somewhat exasperated Peters. “Lots of fans, lots of people, but it’s all good. We take it one day at a time.”

But with all of that - there is always the memory of what life is like back home in the Philippines. There is the thought that if the people that gunned down Pacquiao’s campaign workers decided to come here - that they could easily find him and easily get close to him.

“Yes, you are probably right in asking that question,” said the member of Team Pacquiao. “But Manny lives his life and he likes to be free. He likes to do what he wants when he wants and he likes to be close to the people. Manny is a man of the people and that’s why his people love him.”

Facebook Fishville Cheat Codes, Tips and Tricks

Facebook Fishville Cheat Codes, Tips and TricksAnother third party Facebook application that most Facebook users love to play online is Fishville. Like Facebook Farmville, Farm Town, Ninja Saga, Fishville is a Flash-based game launched by Zynga and available through social networking websites like Facebook. The object of FishVille is to start and build your fish tanks using a combination of coins and Sand Dollars. The trick here is that the dollars not only cost real money, but they take a lot of time to get. In addition, the fish which will bring in money take hours to 'grow', but if you don't log back in and sell them in time, they will eventually die, wasting all that hard earned coin and cash spent to buy and grow those fish. People lose a lot of money if they play the game wrong, and with dozens of different fishes, tanks and time frames, finding the right balance is not only vital for successful play, but tricky to figure out. Fishville comes with a helpful guide of tips, tricks, and cheats that will help you quickly advance in game play, and make your fellow Facebook friends jealous at your ability to speed through the game with ease.

How to Increase your Money and Experience points fast in Fishville
Buy fish eggs, grow them and sell and that’s it you will get experience points. Raise and sell fish that matures fast. These include Mini Dart Goby, Sardine fish and Red Spot Cardinal. Why they are called fast fish, because you can grow these fish in just 5 minutes, 3 minutes, and 15 minutes respectively. Of course you can earn coins as fast as you can and you can get experience points when you raise these fast fish rather than fish that would take you a day before you can sell them.
* FishVille players need to wait until their fish mature in order to sell them. Choosing the rapidly maturing Mini Dart Goby fish is an early, and cheap, option for only 9 Coins but we recommend choosing fish that take longer to mature. Our current favorite, pictured here, is the Scooter Blenny. Purchased for 88 Coins and grows every 24 hours, when sold it brings in 221 Coins. Along with coins, the Blenny also brings in a lot of XP and with more XP, the faster you'll level up.
* buying fish eggs also gets you more XP. Here we've purchased a Shy Hamlet for 35 Coins and gained 15 XP. If you purchased a Scooter Blenny, you'd spend 88 Coins but gain 29 XP. If you want more XP and have the coins, buy the more expensive fish.

So get started at FishVille, if you haven't already, and once you're up and running, come back here and check out this Fishville Cheat Codes, Tricks and Tips for more secrets. It'll put you way ahead in the game, way fast.

Nonito Donaire KO`s Vargas in Third Round

In the main event, Donaire scored a third-round knockout of Manuel Vargas (26-5-1, 11 KOs) of Jalisco, Mexico, dropping him with a right hand, followed by a left that had referee Joe Cortez counting Vargas out at 1:33 of the round. (Donaire is pictured above on the below, with Vargas).
Montiel impressively defended his crown with a first-round knockout over Ciso Morales (14-1, eight KOs), of Bohol, Philippines.

Morales was counted out at 2 minutes, six seconds of the round by referee Robert Byrd, this, after failing to rise after taking one of three, triple-left hooks right on the beltline from Montiel.

Morel earned a controversial, split-decision over former two-time world champion Gerry Penalosa (54-8-2, 36 KOs), of Cebu, Philippines, to win their WBO 118-pound title eliminator.

Judges Duane Ford and Paul Smith had it, 116-112, and, 115-113, for Morel, with Dick Houck scoring it for Penalosa, 115-113. FanHouse had it for Penalosa, 115-113.

Bernabe Concepcion (30-2-1, 17 KOs), of Rizal, Philippines, scored a unanimous decision victory over Puerto Rican southpaw Mario Santiago (21-2-1, 14 KOs) for the right to face WBO titlist, Juan Manuel Lopez (28-0, 25 KOs), of Puerto Rico in June.

Donaire Can't "Weight" to Fight

The weigh-in process, held in the Shimmer Showroom at the Las Vegas Hilton for the Pinoy Power 3/Latin Fury 13 pay-per-view card, was supposed to have begun yesterday afternoon somewhere between 3:00pm and 3:15pm.

But by the time 3:45pm came and went there was still no sign of the ‘A’ side of the main event - Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.

These well orchestrated affairs usually begin at the appointed time, which led to speculation that Donaire was somewhere behind the dark curtain or still locked in a sauna making a valiant attempt to sweat off the last few ounces he would need to in order to make the 115-pound weight limit ahead of his title bout tonight against last-minute sub Manuel Vargas.

The 350-seat Shimmer Showroom is the new home of comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay, who began a 28-week run here last week, but the situation with Nonito Donaire and his problems in making weight is no laughing matter. He was 123 pounds on Tuesday morning before a run the UNLV outdoor track, which meant that with only three days to go - he still needed to drop eight pounds.

He has been surviving on nothing more than soup, apples and bananas in the days that have led up to this fight. His original opponent, Gerson Guerrero, fell out Wednesday after failing an eye exam. A couple of hours later, Top Rank, Inc. who is the promoter of tonight’s marathon card, found Manuel Vargas somewhere in Mexico. It just so happened that he had been training for another bout, also scheduled for tonight. Promoter Bob Arum said of Vargas, “He jumped at the chance.”

Donaire finally did arrive Friday at 3:55pm, nearly an hour late, but it would be another 10 minutes or so before he stripped down to his shorts and stepped onto the scales. Despite all of the uncertainty regarding whether he would be able to boil his 27-year-old body down to the super-flyweight limit - he made the 115 pound mark on his first try.

“I just want to fight - it doesn’t matter who - bring on anyone,” said a dried out looking Donaire who claims he began training for tonight’s bout two months ago. “I feel Guerrero’s pain at having to drop out. He’s a true warrior and I know that he trained really hard for me and I know he was ready. But I’m ready for Vargas now.”

Donaire claims he has been training for two months in order to squeeze his body into a super flyweight suit.

Arum, who never tires of singing the praises of the fighters in his vast Filipino stable says of Donaire, “He’s a fan favorite. He is a terrific, terrific craftsman - and a great fighter.”

It is difficult to argue with Arum. Donaire, with a record of 22-1, 14 knockouts, has begun to find his way onto boxing’s pound-for-pound lists. He is one of the best young fighters in the world and should he continue to remain focused he may be able to go on to win titles in several more weight divisions. His lanky frame holds weight easily, he claims he walks around at 140 pounds and believes he will one day fight as high as featherweight or super featherweight. If Filipino countryman and world's best fighter, Manny Pacquiao decides to pursue a career in politics, Donaire is the Philippine heir apparent.

“I’m just hoping that the fight is going to be a good one,” said Donaire who has two prominent, pierced ears that stick out from under his cap. He is as well-spoken a fighter as you will ever meet. He is also a God fearing man.

“I’m ready to show my heart as a fighter, as a Filipino fighter and as someone who loves the sport,” he says. “I think whoever trains hard, whoever has a good coach and whoever believes in God can be as good as they can be.”

Donaire is trying to be as good as he can be. For this fight, he says it’s the first time he has ever reached twelve rounds in sparring.

“I worked really hard for this camp and everything has been covered. Power, speed, everything - so I am very confident,” he says. “You can never stop learning in this game and I’m still learning. I want to be the best.”

As long as he can continue to win, Donaire has a bright future with several big fights looming on the horizon.

As a flyweight and now super-flyweight, Donaire is naturally fast and he has extremely quick reflexes. He is attempting to perfect the southpaw stance and his hope is that he will someday be as effective fighting as a lefty as he is as a righty. He is not shy about admitting that it is becoming increasingly difficult to make the 115-pound weight limit - but even at that anemic weight he has explosive type power on his shots.

And while Donaire is as friendly and endearing a fighter as you will meet, he has a mean streak in him that fuels his success and ambition.

“If I get the opportunity, I’m going to take my opponent out,” he says. “As a fighter, that’s something I always want to do. There’s no better win than a knockout win. In my fights, whenever I get the chance for a knockout victory - I go for it. Hopefully, I can take this guy out and I’m going to give it all I got.”

Nonito Donaire can’t wait.

Donaire Sweating Off the Pounds

Nonito Donaire has a new opponent for tomorrow's bout - but he still needs to lose a few pounds.

Within the past few days, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire has undergone some drama. His original opponent for tomorrow's pay-per-view main event, Gerson Guerrero, failed an eye exam and was scratched from the card.

With approximately 72 hours before the first bell was set to ring, Top Rank scrambled to find a replacement that would keep the main event intact. They found Mexican contender Manuel Vargas, 26-4-1, 11 KO, who will step in to fill the void on the card that will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton.

With that crisis resolved, next up could be a potential problem on the scales.

Donaire’s struggles with his weight have been well documented. He was forced to drop 29 pounds in the weeks before his Dec. 2007 IBF flyweight title fight against Luis Maldonado. Donaire went from 140 pounds all the way down to 111 and he blamed the weight loss on his legs feeling week throughout the bout. Prior to his April 2009 match with Raul Martinez, Donaire admitted to again having a problem making 112-pounds and claimed that he lost over 10 pounds the week of the fight.

As of Tuesday, Donaire weighed 123 pounds. He needs to make 115 by this afternoon’s official weigh-in.

Donaire is now in Las Vegas and has been seen running and doing calisthenics at the University of Nevada Las Vegas outdoor track. He is training under the guidance of Jonathan Penalosa and has been on a strict diet, low in carbohydrates, in an effort to hit 115-pounds. Camp insiders say that he has not eaten rice in the past month and between now and Friday he is restricted to a sparse smattering of soup, eggs, fruits and vegetables.

In an effort to get down to 115 pounds, Donaire has been working out at a feverish pace.

One of the staples of Donaire’s weight-loss regimen is Pedialyte - which is actually a drink intended for children and infants that helps to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes suffered during dehydration.

Donaire, 27, claims he has been training for this weekend's fight for two months and that he has been sparring with some young fighters who are on the verge of turning pro. His “walk-around” weight is in the neighborhood of 140-pounds.

Donaire, 22-1, 14 KO, told me after the Luis Maldonado fight that he could see himself one-day fighting at featherweight or super featherweight and perhaps higher. He also said that he thought he would be able to put on the weight in an effective manner and retain his punching power as he moved up.

Roger Mayweather Lays It All Out

I recently caught up with former two-time world champ and current boxing trainer Roger Mayweather. He is of course the trainer and uncle of Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who will face Shane Mosley on May 1 in Las Vegas.

“Shane Mosley ain’t goin’ to beat Floyd,” said the mercurial Mayweather during a brief conversation. “It don’t matter if I was his uncle or not - I’d still say the same thing. All you gotta’ do is ask yourself one question. Shane lost to Cotto, right? Would Cotto beat Floyd? I think even you know the answer to that.

“I’ll tell you what this whole fight is gonna’ come down to,” continued Mayweather. “Shane Mosley can’t out think Floyd and that right there is all you need to know about it. He can’t out think him. Floyd’s too smart.”

While Floyd, who will be 33 by the time the fight takes place, is undefeated at 39-0, Roger says that the way to beat him, if anybody could, “Is with the jab. You gotta’ be able to probably hit Floyd with the jab, back him up and then get him on the ropes. Oscar did good, ‘cause Oscar got a good jab, he made it close. Thing is though, ain’t nobody out there can do that, you know what I mean?”

Many within the industry feel that perhaps Mosley, 38, could be the one to seriously test Floyd, but the opinionated Roger sees things differently.

“No, Shane don’t have the jab that he needs in order to hit Floyd. He’s got the speed, you know, the handspeed, but he ain’t got the jab. So, without the jab, how’s he gonna’ hit Floyd. To get to Floyd you gotta’ have the jab.”

Roger, however, did not totally dismiss Mosley as he has others that have challenged Floyd in the past.

“It will be a good fight, a good fight,” said Roger, 48, who is currently free on $13,000 bail and is facing battery and coercion charges from a Las Vegas incident last August with a woman he previously trained. If found guilty, he is facing from 3 to 16 years in prison. The trial is set to begin June 1.

“Shane Mosley is a good fight for anyone,” Roger theorizes. “But see, the thing here, the thing here is that he ain’t gonna’ be able to hit Floyd with the jab and he damn sure can’t outbox him. Then, like I said, he can’t out think him neither. So, since he can’t do none of them three things, then he in trouble.”

The YouTube Sensation Comes to Your Tube

Edwin Valero will make his U.S. television debut tonight on Showtime.

Edwin Valero was first an Internet sensation on YouTube. With freakish displays of punching power, he began his professional boxing career by knocking out his first eighteen opponents - in the first round. To say that he was an undergound superstar would be an understatement.

So just how popular is Edwin Valero now?

Well, he is most certainly the most talked about fighter that many boxing fans have never actually seen. A simple sparring session that was recorded and posted to YouTube a few years back, has, at last count, garnered nearly 300,000 views. His April 2009 bout versus Antonio Pitalua is now at over 200,000 hits - and counting.

His ring record currently stands at an unbelievable twenty-six knockouts in twenty-six straight fights - and nobody has lasted past the tenth round with him. He has won world titles at 130 and 135 pounds and tonight from Monterrey, Mexico, Valero will finally make his long awaited U.S. television debut when he defends his WBC lightweight title against Antonio Demarco on Showtime.

“I believe that the sport of boxing is all about punching,” said Valero, a Venezuelan native, during a recent chat with reporters. “Some people look at my style and they say all I can do is punch or they say it is not attractive. Well, I say that’s what I know how to do best - I throw punches.”

But YouTube sensation or not, Valero has been kept out of American rings for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he suffered a head injury in a 2001 motorcycle accident that made it so a “spot” showed up on a routine 2004 MRI brain scan.

Valero shows off his left hand. When it lands it sends the opposition sprawling. Not one opponent has last the distance against him.

The medical community in this country deemed the “spot” as too dangerous to allow him into the ring and they suspended his boxing license. What followed was that Valero became a worldwide vagabond who would fight in any country that would allow him. He gloved up and continued his winning ways in Argentina, Panama, Venezuela, France, Mexico and Japan. He did, however, manage to get one fight in Texas in April of last year.

But shortly after that step forward, his progression to become established here in America suffered a body-blow when he was nabbed in May 2009 for DUI in Las Vegas. Ever since, Valero has been denied a visa to re-enter the country.

“My goal is to continue to fight in the United States and I understand that’s where the opportunities are,” Valero says. “My promoter, Bob Arum, is working on getting me a visa so that I can return. I'm going to guess that in the next three months that we’ll get that done.”

It could be wishful thinking on his part, but the one thing Edwin Valero doesn’t seem to dwell on is obstacles. He makes short work of opponents in the ring and when he was denied the opportunity to make a living here in the U.S. - he simply packed up his gym bag and fought just about everywhere else. The knockouts didn’t stop coming and the buzz that surrounded the sinewy man who goes by the nicknames “El Inca” or “Dinamita” never ceased.

The one thing that Edwin Valero has learned is that knockouts and knockout power have no linguistic, cultural or geographical boundaries. People the world over love to see a puncher and as a result, home is where Edwin Valero decides to make it.

“I can tell you that I’m very happy to be fighting in Mexico again,” Valero explains. “I’m Venezuelan, yes, but when I fight here, I feel like I'm at home. For me, fighting in Mexico is actually a benefit for me and I look forward to it. Mexican fans are great boxing fans and they know this sport very well.”

Valero is a colorful character with an interesting background. He has fought all over the world.

The critics of Valero, and there are lots of them, maintain that he is a crude brawler with little technique or legitimate boxing skills. He has yet to beat a well-known, world-class fighter and he changes trainers with the frequency that some change their socks. He was arrested in Venezuela in 2009 for allegedly beating up a family member and public intoxication, but those charges were later dropped. It's those types of things the naysayers point to when they launch their criticism.

Valero, however, takes all of his detractors and hardships in stride.

“I really don't pay attention to what people think about me,” he says. “I do what I do because I want to do it. The way I live, that’s just me. It's not that I'm controversial, it just may come across as controversial, but I live the way I do, I train the way I do because I want to.”

He proudly sports a large tattoo of the Venezuelan flag and President Hugo Chavez on his chest. While many in the U.S. have a negative perception of Chavez, Valero is an unabashed supporter. He has even gone so far as to claim the reason he has really been denied a visa to re-enter the U.S. is because of his support of the controversial Chavez.

One thing, however, that becomes clear when you watch Valero fight is that although he is awkward in the ring, he is very effective. A southpaw, he has quick hands and is extremely aggressive. Defense is not one of his specialties. But when his bone hammers land, the shots are absolutely devastating. His gym sessions are the stuff of legend as stories abound of him knocking out other fighters, even while wearing oversized sparring gloves and headgear.

Valero understands full well the allure of his clubbing punching power, but he often downplays its attractiveness.

“I really don’t go into any fight looking for a quick knockout,” he explains. “I try and measure my opponent and get my timing down and go from there. I’m in there to do a job, which is to win and stay undefeated and keep my title. There was pressure on me when I was winning all those fights in the first round. But once that ended, so did the pressure. Now, I take it round by round and let the knockout come.”

And tonight on your TV - the Internet sensation finally comes to life.

Urango All Set to Tango with Alexander

Their 140-pound unification bout is still 30 days away, but those that have seen IBF titlist Juan Urango working out at his training camp at the Fight Factory in Tampa, Florida say that he is in amazing condition for his March 6 showdown versus WBC belt holder Devon Alexander.

“He’s ready to fight right now,” said one of the witnesses with intimate knowledge of Urango’s training sessions. “He looks like a middleweight, is punching like a wrecking ball and he really is something to watch.”

Urango, a 29-year-old southpaw, is a 2-time IBF junior welterweight titlist and he and the undefeated Alexander, who has a record of 19-0, 12 KOs, will meet at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn.

A Cooper City, Florida resident, Urango originally hails from Colombia. He is a big puncher with a record of 22-2-1, 17 KOs. Once considered a limited brawler, Urango has added some nuance to his game in recent years.

“His fitness is unquestionable,” said the source. “The drills that he goes through and some of the workouts that I have seen him endure would make most fighters just wilt.”

One of drills that Urango routinely uses involves getting into the ring with four different training assistants. One of the assistants monitors the time clock and supervises the drill. Another wears a body protector, another a set of hand mitts and still another has boxing gloves on. Urango goes non-stop for a minute at a time with each assistant with no breaks in between.

“He’ll pound away on the guy wearing the body bag and he just unloads with brutal right hooks, left hands and uppercuts,” said the witness. “Then the head guy yells, ’Next!’ and the fellow with the mitts steps in and Urango fires quick shots at him for a minute. Then it’s ‘Next!’ again and a young guy wearing gloves comes in and shoots shots at Urango who tries to avoid all of the punches by moving his head and upper body. They do this over and over and over with no breaks. It really is brutal.”

In an eight year career, Urango has only lost to Ricky Hatton and Andre Berto. He last fought in August and scored an impressive knockout win over Randall Bailey.

Alexander, promoted by Don King, is one of the most promising young belt holders in the sport. The odds have recently been posted on the partial unification bout and the St. Louis, Miss. native, who many perceive to be untested and unproven, has been installed as the overwhelming betting favorite.

My Skybroadband Internet Connection

In a desperate need to improve my connection, I avail the sky cable broadband connection a.k.a skybroadband internet connection. I was expecting faster connection because it was not using phonelines, it uses cable instead.Theoritically cable wires have higher bandwidth and could carry more data.
Installation was very fast took only 10-15 minutes plus little talkies and initial speedtest result was very satisfying . 1.29 Mbps for th download sped and 0.45 mbps for the upload speed. Quite fast connection for an average user like me. The only downsides was what i read in some forum that it was slow in torrent. May be because IP was not static but dynamic instead. So if you were a torrent user and love to download lots of movies in torrent sites, this connection is not for you. But for me it was still a myth I would try it myself later and proved if its a given fact or not.
See pix below of new connection speed..
Hope skybroadband speed would be stable not only during trial period but for the rest of my connected years..I`l just cross my fingers on it....

Samuel Peter Takes Promoters to Court

In happier times, Samuel Peter was the champ and Don King was a flag waving supporter.

Adhering to the old line, "Don't take the law into your own hands - you take 'em to court" former World Boxing Council heavyweight titlist Samuel Peter has filed a lawsuit in Clark County District Court in Nevada against former promoters Don King and Dino Duva.

"The Nigerian Nightmare" claims he is still owed more than $400,000 for his Oct. 2008 bout vs. Vitali Klitschko which took place in Berlin, Germany. Peter was the holder of the WBC belt at the time and his contracted purse was $4 million.

Peter is claiming that King and Duva have withheld monies owed to him and he is suing for punitive damages in excess of $1 million. The lawsuit alleges that both Duva and King conspired to steal, commit fraud, misrepresented their intentions and were in breach of contract.

Peter, 29, held the WBC belt for seven months before he lost to Klitschko. During the time that he was co-promoted by Duva and King it was a triumvirate that was characterized by bickering, internal squabbles and allegations of backstabbing.

In the months leading up to his ill-fated bout against Klitschko, Peter had been so distracted by the situation with his promoters, manager and trainers that he allowed his weight to balloon to over 300-pounds. As a result, he was not mentally or physically prepared to meet Klitschko who beat him easily and forced him to surrender after eight rounds.

The mercurial Peter and the magnanimous King had a tumultuous and often testy relationship.

Peter has suffered through a series of relationships with trainers and promoters over the past few years. Dino Duva, in an effort to promote Peter into a heavyweight title fight spent most of his time, energy and money on the Nigerian. He eventually had to sell half of his promotional company, Duva Boxing, as well as his interest in Peter, to King in order to remain solvent. But not long after Peter lost the heavyweight belt, Duva abandoned professional boxing altogether to focus on bringing Chinese Olympians to America. He formed a new company called D & D Global with partner Richard Davimos.

Peter's lawsuit alleges a series of misdeeds from advance payments, unauthorized training expenses and other alleged financial improprieties.

After getting clear of King and Duva, Peter signed a promotional agreement with Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc. in July 2009. He has scored three straight knockouts against non-descript opposition and has weighed as low as 239 pounds, which was his lightest in the past seven years.

Peter, 33-3, 26 KOs is slated to face 23-year-old prospect Nagy Aguilera, 15-2, 10 KOs on March 12 in an IBF heavyweight title eliminator in Dallas, Texas. The winner would be in line for a title shot later this year versus the IBF heavyweight champion.

Freddie Roach a 4 Time Trainer of The Year

pacquiao vs clotteyWinning his fourth BWAA Trainer of The Year Award, Hall of Famer Freddie Roach have certainly etched his name alongside his mentor, the great Eddie Futch, as one of the most revered teachers of this brutal sport of boxing. Manny Pacquiao may be his prized ward, but his methodology of the Sweet Science has produced a long list of champions and elite contenders. And at his current state, he will certainly be producing more. Roach’s run in 2009 kicked off with Britain’s Amir Khan winning decisively against aging legend Marco Antonio Barrera. These were followed by huge wins Pacquiao and rising star Guillermo Rigondeaux. 2009 also made history for Roach as his star pupil Pacquiao went on to win seven titles in seven different weight classes, a feat no other boxer has achieved. Pacquiao is also named BWAA’s Fighter of The Year (2009) and Fighter of the Decade. Such achievements will tell you what kind of trainer the former pugilist from Dedham, Massachusetts, is. Roach is the epitome of a guy whose will is unbreakable and whose soul unconquerable. Never did he ceased his existence and watched on the sidelines as tremors in his body make is difficult for him to function. Instead, he wills himself against it.“My doctors tell me that someday it would affect me where I can no longer function as well as I do,” Roach said. “Until that day happens, I am going to work my ass off.” Congratulations to Coach Freddie Roach, 4-time Trainer of the Year, All-Time Great!

My Sun Wireless Broadband DSL Speed

It was frustating day of i-net surfing activities. So out of frustration of waiting a site to open in 5 minutes, i decided to write this blog. Who will not be frustrated if your speed for 2 hours na is like the speed below?
My nightmare began when i started using Sun Broadband Wireless Speed. I have been using the net for quite sometime and was a necessity for me. I was using Bayantel internet for the past 2 years and have given me no problem at all. There were true to advertisement of burst up speed and it was truly fast and for 899 mothly of unlimited interenet use, I could say it was worth it.
My nightmare began when I relocate my outlet in sampaloc area. And since I was needing immediate connection for my PC and laptop, I have evaluated wireless broadband choices such as smartbro, globe tatoo and sun wireless broadband.
I have decided to choice Sun Wireless Broadband because it offers unlimited access to its subscriber. I thought since Sun have a little bit subscriber on its list, the tendency to have less traffic and congestion in bandwidth was remote thus the speed promised in their ads would be true…So I completed my application, choose the 3 months contract instead because I was hesitant in the first place..I paid 888 for the modem p lus the advance 799. Although its that much it was hard earned money and I expect its worth it choosing Sun wireless Broadband.
Here comes the best part, using SWB as they call it, it was initiall succes although a little bit slower of they promised it is now ok with me. But on the 4th day of my use, the nightmare of i-net user like me began. Imagine having a speed slower than dial up? On and off connection and worse 0 uload speed..although you could see I am connected to HSDPA “daw” or whatever..I can tolerate it for quite sometimes but 3 days of same speed, its like torturing myself of some sort..wheeew..
I hope sun would be kind enough. Im not looking for a refund for my payment but to have immediate termination of my connection so I havent have to pay for a service they promised I never enjoyed I am reconsidering to try this time skycable connection or return to Bayantel which have been my previous bridge connection to the e-world.
