Who is General Danilo Lim?

The siege was over...

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and Brigadier General Danilo Lim, have been arrested.

Former vice president Teofisto Guinogona joined the two inside the Philippine National Police bus.

The arrests on Lim and Trillanes were effected shortly after they declared that they were leaving the hotel where they held a six-hour siege to demand the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

But who is Gen. Lim?

General Lim. In these times of endless shenanigans perpetuated by people who are supposed to serve our country and people, this man shines as a small candle in a sea of callousness and indifference.

The roots of newly promoted Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim can be traced to Xiamen, China, formerly Amoy. His father married a girl from Bohol but Danny, as he is called by both friends and detractors, was born and raised in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. He is the youngest of five brothers.

He finished elementary and high school in Solano with flying colors. He was in his first year at UP when he took the entrance exams to the Philippine Military Academy. He topped the exams.

While a plebe, he took the entrance exam to the US Military Academy at West Point, one of the world’s premier military academies. He topped the exams.

After graduation, he returned to the country, took the Scout Ranger Course where he graduated not only No. 1 but also led his team in registering the only encounter of the class during their test mission. He opted to be assigned to Jolo after that. He commanded the forward Recon Unit of the 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division in Sulu where his name became a byword due to his combat exploits. He was wounded twice in combat.

Then AFP chief Gen. Romeo Espino noticed this officer and promptly directed GHQ to transfer then Lt. Lim to his alma mater, PMA, for instructor duty. He stayed for a few years then packed his bags again for the US to take up the Advanced Infantry Course at the Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia. He not only topped the course but was also awarded the Distinguished Allied Student Award for that year. When he returned, he joined the First Scout Ranger Regiment as chief of operations.

In 1989, then Capt. Lim led the Makati siege that lasted seven days. The failed coup attempt resulted in his incarceration for two years. He was released during the Ramos administration after the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement between government and the military rebels. He was a member of the RAM-SFP-YOU peace panel in the negotiations.

Moving on with his life, Lim took the Command and General Staff course which he again topped. He ran off with seven of the eight awards given by the school. Only the physical fitness award called the "Tarzan Award" slipped through his fingers and was given to a much younger officer.

He later commanded the 42nd Infantry Battalion where he again made a name for himself for the various combat accomplishments of his unit. He also endeared himself to the Bicolanos in Camarines Sur where his battalion was based.

He then became deputy commander of the First Scout Ranger Regiment and later regiment commander.

BGen. Lim is married with a daughter still in high school. Despite all his achievements and accolades, this soft-spoken and modest officer does not have his own house yet – in direct contrast to his siblings who occupy senior positions in huge corporations (also in direct contrast to some AFP officers we know). He has consciously chosen to live a simple life dedicated to serving his country and people.

In six years, he will be bowing out of the military service.

I take my hat off to this officer and gentleman whose values and principles seem to be dying traits in this mess of an AFP. We need more people like him if we are to even hope to lift our country out the quagmire it is in.

So today, I greet all the other people who are not like BGen. Danilo Lim: Mabuhay ang mga kurakot sa gobyerno ni GMA!

Antonio Tarver Knows They Are Out to Get Him

Millionaire, champion and movie star Antonio Tarver forges on with his life.

There’s a scene in last year’s movie ‘Rocky Balboa’ in which Antonio Tarver’s character, Mason “The Line” Dixon, complains that he isn’t getting the respect he deserves. Despite being the famous and undefeated champion of the world, with all of the trappings of fame that accompany stardom, the public pays him no attention nor takes him seriously. As a result, he’s forced into facing the old champ in Balboa with the idea that it will make people sit up and take notice.

In real life, Antonio “The Magic Man” Tarver finds himself in a similar predicament.

A millionaire several times over, Tarver has an ivory smile and is as engaging and handsome as an athlete that can be found. He’s a well-spoken charmer when he wants to be and he possesses the unique ability to make you believe what he says. He’s a former two-time light heavyweight champion of the world, is married to a beautiful woman, resides in a mansion with a fleet of luxury automobiles parked in the garage – yet Antonio Tarver lives in a dark and suspicious world.

He knows they are out to get him.

It’s not enough that he knocked Roy Jones, Jr. senseless in less than two rounds, after he met Jones at center ring during the referee’s final instructions and asked, “You got any excuses tonight Roy?” It’s not enough that he’s won the light heavyweight championship of the world twice, amassed a fortune in purses and has avenged three of his four career losses. It’s not enough that he’s appeared next to Sylvester Stallone on the silver screen. No, having turned 39 years old just a few days ago, Antonio Tarver still wants more because he says they won’t give him the respect he feels he is owed.

You see, Antonio Tarver feels beaten up by the fight game and that they are out to get him.

He doesn’t understand how his last fight, in which he appeared rusty and a little sluggish against Elvir Muriqi, was scored a close majority decision by the judges.

“I don't understand what these people - how they judge boxing,” says an astounded Tarver. “I guess I don't understand the criteria for judging a boxing match. They don't understand the sophisticated boxing that I do. For anybody to say that was a close fight, it's mind boggling. You tell me after the fourth round that this guy was even in the fight, I beg to differ. That's my take.”

Further still, Tarver thinks that so many unknown people are out to get him that he claims he was drugged or poisoned before his loss to Bernard Hopkins in June 2006. It was a fight in which Tarver was dominated and even knocked down before barely making it to the final bell. Despite all of his preparation, he says clandestine forces got to him. It’s all cloak and dagger stuff and Tarver’s animated description of the widespread conspiracy leading up to the day of the fight reads like a scene from a James Bond movie.

“Something happened,” he says in a serious and suspicious voice. “I don’t want to point the finger, but I believe there’s a possibility that they got to me, or someone got to me with room service, a drink of water or whatever. I wasn’t myself,” he explains. As big as that fight was, I couldn’t get into it mentally, emotionally, spiritually, or nothing. I was zapped for whatever reason. I can’t blame it on my trainer because we trained properly. We were ready. But when I went to bed and woke up that day, I was a zombie and I don’t know what happened. My sister thought that maybe I could have been poisoned. Maybe somebody tampered with some food. My reflexes weren’t there, my counterpunching ability wasn’t there. Something went terribly wrong.”

Sylvester Stallone and Tarver ham it up at the premiere of Rocky Balboa.

So as the southpaw Tarver prepares to face the unknown Danny Santiago Saturday night in Connecticut, he does so with a feeling that he has more to prove to those that have always doubted him. The people that he simply refers to as they.

“Danny Santiago is coming,” says Tarver of his opponent. “Undoubtedly it's a chance of a lifetime for him. I know everybody gets up for me, because if they beat me, they become famous and have an opportunity to become rich. I've got to be at my best at all times. Right now I understand that this is the final chapter of my illustrious career and I want to go out on top, and I want to go out with a bang.”

After a lifetime spent in this racket they call the fight game, Tarver is of the opinion that he has never gotten his just due in the sport. Although he has accomplished more than many, he still reads the unflattering articles that are written about him and he keeps his eye on the moves of the pundits.

“I still hear the critics, so that's motivation in itself,” says Tarver about why he is still fighting. “I'm under a microscope every time I go out. Just winning is not enough for me for some reason. I've got to go out and do the dramatic, so there’s a lot of added pressure. I've got to knock people out, I understand that. Every chance they get they are trying to steal something from me. That's the chip I have on my shoulder.”

While Tarver is still a very formidable fighter, time marches on. During the months he was away from boxing making movies and taking a break after the loss to Hopkins, a new kid on the block emerged at 175 pounds in the form of 25 year-old WBC titlist Chad Dawson. The undefeated Dawson appears to be the future of the division and anybody making claims about being the best at light heavyweight would have to go through Dawson, or the very least Bernard Hopkins, who claimed The Ring Magazine championship belt when he beat Tarver.

Dawson fought on the undercard of Tarver’s last fight against Muriqi. Showtime Championship Boxing analyst Al Bernstein called both the Dawson and the Tarver fights from ringside and he gave his thoughts on a potential Tarver-Dawson fight.

“It’s a very interesting fight,” says the knowledgeable Bernstein. “I think you can make the case certainly that the hand speed and the aggression of Chad Dawson, let’s say in tonight’s case, would have given Antonio Tarver some issues. However, we know that Antonio Tarver is a very good counterpuncher. We know that from the outside he is a very, very good fighter and that’s where Chad Dawson fights for the most part. The whole point of it is it would be a very, very intriguing match-up and one, I think, that people would like to see. And you can honestly say in that division, I think, except maybe for him fighting Hopkins, it’s the most interesting match-up.”

But when Tarver speaks of his future, which, because of his age, is probably only another couple years in the sport, he rarely brings up Dawson’s name. The boxing intelligentsia has been quietly whispering that he needs to fight Dawson or nothing else matters. Certainly Tarver can’t spend his remaining time in boxing facing second-tier fighters like Muriqi and Santiago.

What would they say then?

So the question is this: What exactly does Antonio Tarver want to accomplish in the twilight of what has been a career that has had brief flashes of luminescence?

“I won’t listen to the naysayers. I want to accomplish like I did before,” Tarver resolutely declares. “I want them to choke on their words. I want them to suffer and come up for air. When it's all said and done, they are going to have to speak it loud and clear, that the “Magic Man” was by far one of the best. And when they look back at it, it's going to be undoubtable. They can't doubt it.”

As you talk to Antonio Tarver it becomes clear that he’s fighting for respect. He hasn’t gotten it, or so he feels, and that’s why he’s still here. It’s why he’s fighting the unknown Danny Santiago on a little fight card in Connecticut that few will see and that even fewer will care about. But Antonio Tarver is suspicious too. Leery that if he leaves boxing they will talk about him badly and they will say he was never much of a prizefighter.

But he tells you, and he’s very convincing, that they should believe otherwise.

“If I retired today or tomorrow, and Hopkins is the only man to defeat me without me coming back and redeeming myself, then I didn't do so bad,” he says. They never gave me credit for anything anyway. They never thought I would make it this far but I'm not looking for any handouts, I'm not looking for any sympathy.”

So Antonio Tarver keeps fighting on. He has to. He knows they are out to get him.

Tools against MMDA officers-for pinoys only

I receive this via email from a friend jjavier of joya last night. After searching the inet-Seems like this has been going around in email egroups, blogs and forums for some time.

No confirmation on whether these are true, but Mr. Antonio Pagulayan (Jr.) has been TOC Head for Roadside Arbitration and Personnel Inspection.

TOOLS AGAINST MMDA OFFICERS

I just reached my limit last weekend, and decided to take action against the abusive MMDA enforcers. I basically called up the MMDA head office and inquired from the Personnel Officer, Antonio Pagulayan, to clarify their policies. Here is what I got.

If any of these abuses seem familiar to you, Mr. Pagulayan has asked that you call either the MMDA hotline (136) or call the Metro Base at 0920-9389861 or 0920-9389875 and ask for an Inspectorate. They will send inspectors to the place where these MMDA officers are extorting, even while you are arguing out of your apprehension.

1. MMDA officers are not allowed to group together in order to apprehend. They are not even allowed to stand together in groups of 2 or more. The only time they are allowed to work together is for special operations (probably when they apprehend groups of buses for smoke belching).

2. Swerving
IS NOT a traffic violation. Moving one lane to the left or right is not swerving, no matter where on the road you do it. And it is even less of a violation when you do it with a signal. Swerving is defined as shifting 2 or more lanes very quickly. So you can argue your way out of this, and call the Metro Base for help.

3. Sadly, using the yellow lane is a traffic violation and will get you a ticket. However, buses are really not allowed to go out of the yellow lane, so if you see selective apprehension of private cars only, you may complain.

4. MMDA has confirmed that your license
MAY NOT BE CONFISCATED at a traffic apprehension. The only time they can do so is if you are part of an accident, or if it is your third violation and you have not settled your fines yet. They are only allowed to give you a ticket, which you can contest. He recommends actually receiving the ticket in some instances, so that you can report the officer who did it.

5. Also, you are free to ask any of these officers for their "mission order", which is written by their supervisor. If they apprehend you for a violation that is not in their mission order for the day, you can report them and they will receive disciplinary action.

So go out and fight for your rights if and when the occasion arises!

TIP: Print and keep a copy of this email in your car for future reference

For all Laptop User Out there!!!!Lifetime battery

Tired of carrying your laptop charger and spare batteries around? Soon you won’t have to.

Thanks to work being funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, laptop batteries could have a continuous power battery that lasts for 30 years without a single recharge.

Scientists have developed the breakthrough betavoltaic power cells that are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source.

As the radioactive material decays, it emits beta particles that transform into electric power that is capable of fuelling an electrical device like a laptop for years.

Are they harmful?

Though they sound nuclear, they’re not. They don’t use fission, fusion, or chemical processes to produce energy and therefore don’t produce any radioactive or hazardous waste. Betavoltaics generate power when an electron strikes a particular interface between 2 layers of material. The process uses beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton, which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This makes the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (solar) cell. Electrons scatter out of their normal orbits in the semiconductor and into the circuit, creating a usable electric current.

The profile of the batteries can be quite small and thin. A porous silicon material is used to collect the hydrogen isotope tritium, which is generated in the process. The reaction is non-thermal, which means laptops and other small devices like mobile phones will run much cooler than with traditional lithium-ion power batteries.

The best part about these cells is when they eventually run out of power: They’re totally inert and non-toxic, so environmentalists needn’t fear these high-tech scientific wonder batteries. If all goes well, plans are for these cells to reach store shelves in 2 or 3 years.

Global Broadband prices...

60% now on-line

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report says 60% of its member countries net users are now on broadband.

The report said countries that had switched to fibre networks had the best speeds at the lowest prices.

In Japan net users have 100Mbps lines, 10 times higher than the OECD average.

Japan’s price for broadband per megabit per second is the lowest in the OECD at $0.22 (0.11p), said the report. The most expensive is Turkey at $81.13 (£40.56).
In the US, the cheapest megabit per second broadband connection is $3.18 (£1.59) while in the UK it is $3.62 (£1.81).

Cheapest entry level Broadband

per month

  1. Sweden $10.79
  2. Denmark $11.11
  3. Switzerland $12.53
  4. US $15.93
  5. France $16.36
  6. Netherlands $16.85
  7. New Zealand $16.86
  8. Italy $17.63
  9. Ireland $18.18
  10. Finland $19.49

Upload and Download

Subscribers to Japan’s fibre networks can also upload at the same speed they can download, which is not possible with ADSL (broadband over a telephone line) and most cable subscriptions. Sweden, Korea and Finland also offer 100Mbps net connections, as all four countries have switched to fibre optic networks.

The OECDrepresents 30 of the leading democratic economics, from Australia to the US, France to Japan.
“Broadband is very quickly becoming the basic medium for sevice delivery on both fixed and wireless networks,” said the report.

Trends are difficult to predict

JupiterResearch telecoms analyst Ian Fogg said: “It’s very hard to draw comparisons across 30 countries globally because there are different trends happening in each of them.
However, he said the entry price for broadband was an incredibly important criteria to compare.
“Because the market is very fragmented consumers care about cheap prices.”

According to the report, broadband prices for DSL connections across the 30 countries have fallen by 19% and increased in speed by 29% in the year to October 2006. Cable prices and speeds followed a similar trend.

UK Broadband switch

“BT (in the UK) has been very slow to switch across (to ADSL2+). ”
Ian Fogg, JupiterResearch

The least expensive monthly subscription for always-on broadband was in Sweden, where $10.79 (£5.40) per month bought a 256kbps connection. The country with the most expensive entry point for broadband access was Mexico, where it cost $52.36 (£26.18) per month for 1mbps.

Mr Fogg said: “In many of the OECD countries those people without broadband and making the transition are feeling their way and are very conscious of price. They haven’t seen the need to go to broadband historically.”

The entry-level price points do not take into account bundled deals, such as incorporating free broadband with a TV contract, which are becoming increasingly important to the market.

Mr Fogg said many countries had seen a jump in broadband speeds over the last few years as many ISPs utilising existing telephone lines had started to push ADSL2+.

ADSL2+ is a technology which doubles the frequency band of a typical ADSL connection over a phone line, in effect doubling the amount of data which can be sent downstream to a user.

Maximum Speeds

The theoretical maximum speed of an ADSL2+ line is 24Mbps, still much slower than speeds over fibre optic networks.

“ADSL2+ hasn’t happened everywhere and it’s happened at different times in different countries,” explained Mr Fogg.

“France was the first country in the western world to use the technology, about two or three years ago.

“BT (in the UK) has been very slow to switch across. The only option for UK customers has been to get it from competitors, notably Be, which is owned by O2, and Sky.”
